## What it does

The skill hands the agent a working order for API docs: add the SpringDoc starter, set properties in `application.yml`, annotate controllers and DTOs. Reference files cover Maven and Gradle dependencies, configuration, annotations, security, pagination, exception handling and build integration. The agent opens the file it needs and applies the pattern to your code.

Documentation runs on `@Tag`, `@Operation`, `@ApiResponse`, `@Parameter`, `@Schema` and `@SecurityRequirement`. Security schemes (JWT, OAuth2, Basic Auth, API key) go into the `OpenAPI` bean and get attached to controllers with `@SecurityRequirement`. For Spring Data `Pageable` the skill advises `@ParameterObject` — skip it and the page parameters scatter into separate fields that Swagger UI renders badly.

Endpoints land at `/v3/api-docs` for the JSON spec and `/swagger-ui/index.html` for the UI. One warning is stated outright: keep sensitive data out of examples and schema descriptions. Both WebMvc and WebFlux are covered, and Kotlin-based APIs are supported.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-openapi-documentation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-openapi-documentation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-openapi-documentation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit spring-boot-openapi-documentation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-openapi-documentation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spring-boot-openapi-documentation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-openapi-documentation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- wire SpringDoc into a Spring Boot 3.x project
- annotate controllers with OpenAPI metadata
- describe DTOs and validation constraints in schemas
- set up JWT or OAuth2 security schemes
- document paginated endpoints backed by Pageable

## Example prompts
- set up SpringDoc OpenAPI in this Spring Boot project
- add @Operation and @ApiResponse annotations to BookController
- define a bearer-jwt security scheme in the OpenAPI bean and apply it to protected endpoints

# Spring Boot OpenAPI Documentation with SpringDoc

## Overview

SpringDoc OpenAPI automates generation of OpenAPI 3.0 documentation for Spring Boot projects with a Swagger UI web interface for exploring and testing APIs.

## When to Use

- Set up SpringDoc OpenAPI in Spring Boot 3.x projects
- Generate OpenAPI 3.0 specifications for REST APIs
- Configure and customize Swagger UI
- Add detailed API documentation with annotations
- Document request/response models with validation
- Implement API security documentation (JWT, OAuth2, Basic Auth)
- Document pageable and sortable endpoints
- Add examples and schemas to API endpoints
- Customize OpenAPI definitions programmatically
- Support multiple API groups and versions
- Document error responses and exception handlers
- Add JSR-303 Bean Validation to API documentation
- Support Kotlin-based Spring Boot APIs

## Quick Reference

| Concept | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Dependencies** | `springdoc-openapi-starter-webmvc-ui` for WebMvc, `springdoc-openapi-starter-webflux-ui` for WebFlux |
| **Configuration** | `application.yml` with `springdoc.api-docs.*` and `springdoc.swagger-ui.*` properties |
| **Access Points** | OpenAPI JSON: `/v3/api-docs`, Swagger UI: `/swagger-ui/index.html` |
| **Core Annotations** | `@Tag`, `@Operation`, `@ApiResponse`, `@Parameter`, `@Schema`, `@SecurityRequirement` |
| **Security** | Configure security schemes in OpenAPI bean, apply with `@SecurityRequirement` |
| **Pagination** | Use `@ParameterObject` with Spring Data `Pageable` |

## Instructions

### 1. Add Dependencies

Add SpringDoc starter for your application type (WebMvc or WebFlux). See [dependency-setup.md](references/dependency-setup.md) for Maven/Gradle configuration.
