# spring-boot-event-driven-patterns

A Spring Boot 3.x skill for domain events, @TransactionalEventListener, Kafka messaging and the transactional outbox pattern. Useful when sync calls between services need to become events.

## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of event-driven architecture patterns for Spring Boot. It covers domain events built on a `DomainEvent` base class with `eventId`, `occurredAt` and `correlationId`, publishing through `ApplicationEventPublisher`, and handling in `@TransactionalEventListener` with the `AFTER_COMMIT` phase so the listener runs only after the transaction commits.

A separate section deals with distributed messaging over Kafka: `KafkaTemplate` for producing, `@KafkaListener` for consuming, serializer settings in `application.yml`, plus the functional Spring Cloud Stream model with `Consumer` beans. For reliable delivery there is the transactional outbox — an `OutboxEvent` entity stores the event in the same transaction as the business data, and a scheduled processor publishes what is pending. Failed messages get retries via `@RetryableTopic` and a dead-letter topic.

The skill reads and writes files and runs commands: `Read`, `Write`, `Edit` and `Bash` are allowed. The Kafka part needs a broker, and the sample configuration points at `localhost:9092`. Without one running you cannot actually verify the producer and consumer templates, so set up the environment first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-event-driven-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-event-driven-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-event-driven-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit spring-boot-event-driven-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-event-driven-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-boot-event-driven-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit/tree/HEAD/plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/spring-boot-event-driven-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- replace blocking calls between services with published events
- fire a listener only after the database transaction commits
- wire a Kafka producer and consumer into Spring Boot
- store an event in the same transaction as business data via outbox
- add retries and a dead-letter topic for failed messages

## Example prompts
- Refactor `processOrder` so it publishes a domain event after saving the order, and move inventory reservation and payment into the handler.
- Set up a `@KafkaListener` for the `product-events` topic and add `@RetryableTopic` with 3 attempts.
- Show me the transactional outbox: the `OutboxEvent` entity and a processor that publishes pending events.

# Spring Boot Event-Driven Patterns

## Overview

Implement Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) patterns in Spring Boot 3.x using domain events, ApplicationEventPublisher, `@TransactionalEventListener`, and distributed messaging with Kafka and Spring Cloud Stream.

## When to Use

- Implementing event-driven microservices with Kafka messaging
- Publishing domain events from aggregate roots in DDD architectures
- Setting up transactional event listeners that fire after database commits
- Adding async messaging with producers and consumers via Spring Kafka
- Ensuring reliable event delivery using the transactional outbox pattern
- Replacing synchronous calls with event-based communication between services

## Quick Reference

| Concept | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Domain Events** | Immutable events extending `DomainEvent` base class with eventId, occurredAt, correlationId |
| **Event Publishing** | `ApplicationEventPublisher.publishEvent()` for local, `KafkaTemplate` for distributed |
| **Event Listening** | `@TransactionalEventListener(phase = AFTER_COMMIT)` for reliable handling |
| **Kafka** | `@KafkaListener(topics = "...")` for distributed event consumption |
