## What it does

The skill walks your agent through building an MCP server on Spring Boot with the official Spring AI framework. It covers tool handlers declared with `@Tool`, parameter docs via `@ToolParam`, reusable prompt templates with `@PromptTemplate` and `@PromptParam`, transport setup, and a tool filter that checks user roles.

You need a model key before anything runs: `application.properties` holds `spring.ai.openai.api-key=${OPENAI_API_KEY}`, and the main class carries `@EnableMcpServer`. Dependencies are `spring-ai-mcp-server` and `spring-ai-starter-model-openai` at 1.0.0, for Maven or Gradle. Transport lives in config — `stdio` for a local process, `http` or `sse` with `port` and `path`.

Security gets its own section. The skill treats model-generated parameters as untrusted: validate inputs, use parameterized SQL, put `@PreAuthorize` on sensitive methods. Skip that and a tool with database or file access becomes an open door. That is where hand-rolled MCP servers tend to break first. Testing is covered too, with `@SpringBootTest` and a mocked service.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit/tree/HEAD/plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/spring-ai-mcp-server-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a tool the model can call from its description
- stand up an MCP server on Spring Boot without wiring the protocol by hand
- switch transport from stdio to HTTP or SSE
- lock admin tools behind a role check
- write a test for a tool handler with a mocked service

## Example prompts
- Build a Spring Boot MCP server with a weather tool by city and a prompt template for Java code review
- Move the MCP server from stdio to HTTP transport on port 8080, path /mcp
- Add a tool filter so methods starting with admin_ are only available to the ADMIN role

# Spring AI MCP Server Implementation Patterns

Implements MCP servers with Spring AI for AI function calling, tool handlers, and MCP transport configuration.

## Overview

Production-ready MCP server patterns: `@Tool` functions, `@PromptTemplate` resources, and stdio/HTTP/SSE transports with Spring AI security.

## When to Use

MCP servers, Spring AI function calling, AI tools, tool calling, custom tool handlers, Spring Boot MCP, resource endpoints, or MCP transport configuration.

## Quick Reference

### Core Annotations

| Annotation | Target | Purpose |
