## What it does

The skill takes finished text — an article, docs, an analysis — and turns it into something you can listen to. Compression runs 3-5x and the meaning survives. First it reads the original question for intent: solving a problem, learning a topic, making a decision, or tracing a fault. That decides what makes it into the spoken version.

Then comes the lead-with-value rule. A listener cannot reread a paragraph, so the core insight goes first and detail waits on request. Seven equal methods collapse into three approaches: the primary one, a backup, and a cue that the rest can be expanded. Structural artifacts such as headings and bullet enumeration get dropped, replaced by transitions between ideas.

The skill ships tables for intent detection and context signals (urgency, scope, experience, personal stakes), content selection rules, and quality checks. It also walks through anti-patterns: compressing everything at the same ratio, reading written prose aloud, trying to fit it all in. It installs into Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill speech-adaptation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/speech-adaptation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/speech-adaptation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill speech-adaptation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/speech-adaptation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill speech-adaptation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/speech-adaptation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills speech-adaptation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/speech-adaptation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill speech-adaptation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/communication/speech-adaptation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/speech-adaptation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill speech-adaptation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- compress an article into podcast copy
- rewrite docs for a voice assistant
- strip headings and lists from a written answer
- pick the main point out of seven equal methods
- prepare material for a spoken talk

## Example prompts
- rewrite this article for audio
- compress the docs into podcast copy, lead with the main point
- adapt this analysis for a voice assistant

# Speech Adaptation

## Purpose

Transform comprehensive written content into purposeful spoken guidance. Speech requires 3-5x compression while maintaining functional value. Apply when converting written content to audio, podcasts, presentations, or voice assistant responses.

## Core Principle

**Lead with value, earn attention.** Listeners can't skim. Front-load what matters and offer expansion rather than exhaustive delivery.

---

## Functional Intent Detection

Parse the original question/content for intent:

| Intent Type | Signals | Focus |
|-------------|---------|-------|
| **Problem-solving** | "How do I..." | Actionable steps |
| **Learning** | "What is..." | Core concepts + examples |
| **Decision-making** | "Should I..." | Key considerations + recommendation |
| **Troubleshooting** | "Why isn't..." | Likely causes + solutions |

## Context Signals

| Signal Type | Examples | Adaptation |
|-------------|----------|------------|
| **Urgency** | "today", "now", "urgent" | Compress to immediate next steps |
| **Scope** | "huge", "complex", "overwhelming" | Lead with simplification |
| **Experience** | "beginner", "new to" | Increase explanation, decrease jargon |
| **Personal stakes** | "I", "my project" | Increase specificity, decrease abstraction |

---

## Content Transformation Principles

### 1. Hierarchical Restructuring

**Written:** Lists methods 1-7 equally
**Spoken:** "There are three main approaches. Start with [most relevant]. If that doesn't work, try [backup]."

### 2. Front-Load Value

**Written:** Builds up to key insights
**Spoken:** Lead with core insight, then supporting details if needed

### 3. Compress Conceptual Space

**Written:** Seven distinct frameworks
**Spoken:** "Basically three strategies: sort by importance, limit your focus, or batch similar work"

### 4. Context-Dependent Detail

**Written:** Explains everything at same depth
**Spoken:** Start simple, indicate where more detail is available
- "Use a priority matrix - urgent versus important"
- Optional expansion cue: "I can break down those four categories if helpful"

### 5. Eliminate Structural Artifacts

**Remove in Speech:**
- Section headers read verbatim
- Bullet point enumeration
- Visual formatting cues
- Redundant category labels

**Add for Speech:**
