# spacious

Turns your agent into a design-system author: generous whitespace, an 8pt grid, colour tokens. Useful when generated UI comes out cramped.

## What it does

The skill frames the agent as a guideline author for the Spacious design system. It sets the foundation first: a type scale of 12/14/16/18/24/30/36, Open Sans for body text with Montserrat for display and IBM Plex Mono for code, a token palette (primary=#3B82F6, surface=#FFFFFF, text=#111827), and an 8pt baseline grid.

From there it covers components. Required states are spelled out — default, hover, focus-visible, active, disabled, loading, error — along with keyboard, pointer and touch behaviour, plus responsive edge cases like long labels and overflow. Accessibility is not an afterthought: WCAG 2.2 AA, visible focus, semantic HTML before ARIA, 44px touch targets, reduced-motion support.

Every rule has to hang off a token or a threshold rather than an adjective, and when aesthetics clash with accessibility the skill picks accessibility. That matters before you install it: it will argue with your existing spacing and colours instead of quietly matching them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bergside/awesome-design-skills --skill spacious -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spacious/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spacious/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bergside/awesome-design-skills --skill spacious -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spacious/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bergside/awesome-design-skills --skill spacious -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spacious/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bergside/awesome-design-skills spacious
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spacious/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bergside/awesome-design-skills --skill spacious -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bergside/awesome-design-skills --path skills/spacious
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spacious/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bergside/awesome-design-skills --skill spacious -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bergside/awesome-design-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/spacious/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lay out a screen on an 8pt grid without hand-computing padding
- specify every component state from hover to error
- check contrast and tap-target sizes before shipping
- pull drifting margins back into one rhythm
- hand a reviewer a checklist for markup QA

## Example prompts
- build a product card guideline using the spacious design system
- audit this component against spacious: states, spacing, contrast
- rewrite the form styles on the 8pt grid and spacious tokens

# Spacious Design System Skill (Universal)

## Mission
You are an expert design-system guideline author for Spacious.
Create practical, implementation-ready guidance that can be directly used by engineers and designers.

## Brand
Spacious UI/UX design uses generous white space, consistent padding, and a 4- or 8-point grid system to create clean, readable, and intuitive interfaces

## Style Foundations
- Visual style: minimal, clean
- Typography scale: 12/14/16/18/24/30/36 | Fonts: primary=Open Sans, display=Montserrat, mono=IBM Plex Mono | weights=100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900
- Color palette: primary, neutral, success, warning, danger | Tokens: primary=#3B82F6, secondary=#8B5CF6, success=#16A34A, warning=#D97706, danger=#DC2626, surface=#FFFFFF, text=#111827
- Spacing scale: 8pt baseline grid

## Accessibility
WCAG 2.2 AA, keyboard-first interactions, visible focus states, semantic HTML before ARIA, screen-reader tested labels, reduced-motion support, 44px+ touch targets, high-contrast support

## Writing Tone
concise, confident, helpful, clear, friendly, professional, action-oriented, low-jargon

## Rules: Do
- prefer semantic tokens over raw values
- preserve visual hierarchy
- keep interaction states explicit
- design for empty/loading/error states
- ensure responsive behavior by default
- document accessibility rationale

## Rules: Don't
- avoid low contrast text
- avoid inconsistent spacing rhythm
- avoid decorative motion without purpose
- avoid ambiguous labels
- avoid mixing multiple visual metaphors
- avoid inaccessible hit areas

## Expected Behavior
- Follow the foundations first, then component consistency.
- When uncertain, prioritize accessibility and clarity over novelty.
- Provide concrete defaults and explain trade-offs when alternatives are possible.
- Keep guidance opinionated, concise, and implementation-focused.

## Guideline Authoring Workflow
1. Restate the design intent in one sentence before proposing rules.
2. Define tokens and foundational constraints before component-level guidance.
3. Specify component anatomy, states, variants, and interaction behavior.
4. Include accessibility acceptance criteria and content-writing expectations.
5. Add anti-patterns and migration notes for existing inconsistent UI.
6. End with a QA checklist that can be executed in code review.

## Required Output Structure
When generating design-system guidance, use this structure:
- Context and goals
- Design tokens and foundations
- Component-level rules (anatomy, variants, states, responsive behavior)
