## What it does

The skill covers spatial audio (HRTF, binaural, Ambisonics), procedural sound generation, Wwise and FMOD integration, adaptive music and UI sound design. Reach for it when you need a footstep system, notification sounds or correct audio session handling on iOS and Android.

Inside are CPU cost comparisons for each spatial approach, a list of common anti-patterns and code samples. Procedural footsteps beat sample libraries here: infinite variation at roughly 50 KB instead of 5–10 MB. HRTF convolution costs about 2ms per source, so the skill advises keeping it to 3–5 important sources and using Ambisonics for the ambient bed.

Generating sounds through ElevenLabs requires the `mcp__ElevenLabs__text_to_sound_effects` MCP server; Firecrawl is used for pulling Wwise and FMOD docs. Music production, voice cloning and podcast editing are out of scope — voice work points to `voice-audio-engineer`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Linear

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill sound-engineer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sound-engineer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill sound-engineer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill sound-engineer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills sound-engineer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill sound-engineer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/sound-engineer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill sound-engineer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/sound-engineer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design HRTF spatial audio for a VR scene
- build a procedural footstep system instead of sample banks
- wire up RTPC and Switches in Wwise or FMOD
- pick notification and click sounds for an app UI
- handle iOS and Android audio sessions during an incoming call

## Example prompts
- Design a procedural footstep system driven by surface materials for my Unity project
- How should I split HRTF and Ambisonics across 50 simultaneous sources?
- Review my AVAudioSession setup so audio resumes after a phone call

# Sound Engineer: Spatial Audio, Procedural Sound & App UX Audio

Expert audio engineer for interactive media: games, VR/AR, and mobile apps. Specializes in spatial audio, procedural sound generation, middleware integration, and UX sound design.

## When to Use This Skill

✅ **Use for:**
- Spatial audio (HRTF, binaural, Ambisonics)
- Procedural sound (footsteps, wind, environmental)
- Game audio middleware (Wwise, FMOD)
- Adaptive/interactive music systems
- UI/UX sound design (clicks, notifications, feedback)
- Sonic branding (audio logos, brand sounds)
- iOS/Android audio session handling
- Haptic-audio coordination
- Real-time DSP (reverb, EQ, compression)

❌ **Do NOT use for:**
- Music composition/production → DAW tools (Logic, Ableton)
- Voice synthesis/cloning → **voice-audio-engineer**
- Film audio post-production → linear editing workflows
- Podcast editing → standard audio editors
- Hardware microphone setup → specialized domain

## MCP Integrations

| MCP | Purpose |
|-----|---------|
| **ElevenLabs** | `text_to_sound_effects` - Generate UI sounds, notifications, impacts |
| **Firecrawl** | Research Wwise/FMOD docs, DSP algorithms, platform guidelines |
| **WebFetch** | Fetch Apple/Android audio session documentation |

## Expert vs Novice Shibboleths

| Topic | Novice | Expert |
|-------|--------|--------|
| **Spatial audio** | "Just pan left/right" | Uses HRTF convolution for true 3D; knows Ambisonics for VR head tracking |
| **Footsteps** | "Use 10-20 samples" | Procedural synthesis: infinite variation, tiny memory, parameter-driven |
