# software-patterns

Compares tradeoffs between architectural patterns and points to the one that fits your problem: coupling, resilience, service boundaries. Useful when code resists testing.

## What it does

This is not a catalog to memorize. The skill walks a decision tree: name the problem class first, then see which pattern closes it. Dependency injection and service-oriented architecture sit at the foundation and are meant to be applied by default. Repository, domain events, anti-corruption layer and circuit breaker stay situational — you reach for them once a symptom shows up.

Six reference files ship with it: `foundational-patterns.md`, `situational-patterns.md`, `anti-patterns.md`, `decision-trees.md`, `examples.md` and `code-smell-signals.md`. That last one maps low-level smells — large switches, nested loops, parameter reassignment, high coupling — to the architectural problem they signal and the pattern that fixes it. Examples are language-agnostic pseudocode.

A red flags section is built in. Reach for every pattern at once, or justify a choice with "it's best practice", and the skill stops you and asks for the actual problem. On a codebase with no coupling symptoms it changes nothing, which is the intended behaviour.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill software-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/software-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/software-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill software-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/software-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill software-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/software-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills software-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/software-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill software-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path universal/architecture/software-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/software-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill software-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- untangle classes that build their own dependencies
- move database access behind a service boundary
- break a call cycle between services with domain events
- stop one slow external API from taking the system down
- keep a third-party API from leaking into your domain model

## Example prompts
- services instantiate their own dependencies and tests are painful — which pattern fits?
- service A calls B, B calls C, C calls A again. how do I break the cycle?
- the external API keeps changing fields and breaking our code. what goes between them?

# Software Patterns Primer

## Overview

Architectural patterns solve specific structural problems. This skill provides a decision framework for when to apply each pattern, not a catalog to memorize.

**Core philosophy:** Patterns solve problems. No problem? No pattern needed.

## When to Use This Skill

Activate when:
- Designing a new system or major feature
- Adding external service integrations
- Code becomes difficult to test or modify
- Services start calling each other in circles
- Failures in one component cascade to others
- Business logic scatters across multiple locations

## Pattern Hierarchy

### Foundational (Apply by Default)

These patterns provide the structural foundation for maintainable systems. Apply unless you have specific reasons not to.

| Pattern | Problem Solved | Signal to Apply |
|---------|---------------|-----------------|
| **Dependency Injection** | Tight coupling, untestable code | Classes instantiate their own dependencies |
| **Service-Oriented Architecture** | Monolithic tangles, unclear boundaries | Business logic scattered, no clear ownership |
```
