## What it does

This skill turns a description of entities, relationships, and access patterns into a database design. For SQL work, it covers normalization through 3NF, primary and foreign keys, suitable data types, and `UNIQUE`, `CHECK`, and `NOT NULL` constraints. For NoSQL models, it considers whether data should be embedded or referenced.

Its workflow covers analysis, design, optimization, and migration. It can plan indexes, add `created_at` and `updated_at`, and produce reversible `up` and `down` migration steps. The review checklist also covers `ON DELETE`, foreign-key indexes, frequently queried columns, and staging tests with production data.

Ask it to design a new schema, normalize a table, add indexes, write a migration, or review an existing model. Describe read and write patterns when the choice between normalization and denormalization matters. SQL is the default when no database style is named.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill database-schema-designer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-schema-designer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-schema-designer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill database-schema-designer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-schema-designer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill database-schema-designer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-schema-designer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install softaworks/agent-toolkit database-schema-designer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-schema-designer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill database-schema-designer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/softaworks/agent-toolkit --path skills/database-schema-designer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-schema-designer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add softaworks/agent-toolkit --skill database-schema-designer -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- design a schema for a new domain
- normalize an existing table
- plan indexes for frequent queries
- write a reversible migration
- audit foreign keys and constraints

## Example prompts
- Run `design schema for {domain}` for a service with users, products, and orders.
- Normalize the `orders` table and propose its foreign keys, constraints, and indexes.
- Create `migration for {change}` with reversible `up` and `down` steps.

# Database Schema Designer

Design production-ready database schemas with best practices built-in.

---

## Quick Start

Just describe your data model:

```
design a schema for an e-commerce platform with users, products, orders
```

You'll get a complete SQL schema like:

```sql
CREATE TABLE users (
  id BIGINT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
  email VARCHAR(255) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
  created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
);
CREATE TABLE orders (
  id BIGINT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
  user_id BIGINT NOT NULL REFERENCES users(id),
  total DECIMAL(10,2) NOT NULL,
  INDEX idx_orders_user (user_id)
);
```

**What to include in your request:**
- Entities (users, products, orders)
- Key relationships (users have orders, orders have items)
- Scale hints (high-traffic, millions of records)
- Database preference (SQL/NoSQL) - defaults to SQL if not specified

---

## Triggers

| Trigger | Example |
|---------|---------|
| `design schema` | "design a schema for user authentication" |
| `database design` | "database design for multi-tenant SaaS" |
| `create tables` | "create tables for a blog system" |
| `schema for` | "schema for inventory management" |
| `model data` | "model data for real-time analytics" |
| `I need a database` | "I need a database for tracking orders" |
| `design NoSQL` | "design NoSQL schema for product catalog" |

---

## Key Terms

| Term | Definition |
|------|------------|
| **Normalization** | Organizing data to reduce redundancy (1NF → 2NF → 3NF) |
| **3NF** | Third Normal Form - no transitive dependencies between columns |
| **OLTP** | Online Transaction Processing - write-heavy, needs normalization |
| **OLAP** | Online Analytical Processing - read-heavy, benefits from denormalization |
| **Foreign Key (FK)** | Column that references another table's primary key |
| **Index** | Data structure that speeds up queries (at cost of slower writes) |
| **Access Pattern** | How your app reads/writes data (queries, joins, filters) |
| **Denormalization** | Intentionally duplicating data to speed up reads |

---

## Quick Reference

| Task | Approach | Key Consideration |
|------|----------|-------------------|
| New schema | Normalize to 3NF first | Domain modeling over UI |
| SQL vs NoSQL | Access patterns decide | Read/write ratio matters |
