## What it does

This skill writes the top-level plan: which channels a brand should be on, what it wants from them, how it wins there and how often it posts. The output is a `social-strategy.md` file. It sits above `content-pillars` and `batch-content-plan`, which read it and stay aligned.

It starts by loading `brand-profile.md`, `audience-research` (`audience.md`) and `content-pillars` if they exist. Then it picks one primary objective — awareness, audience growth, community, authority, leads or sales — plus at most one secondary. Candidate platforms are scored on four things: whether the audience is actually there, whether the brand's content strength fits the format, whether the platform serves the objective, and whether the team can sustain quality on it. One to three channels survive. The rest get named as deliberate drops or repurpose-only maintenance.

Next comes the operating model: a cadence matched to real capacity, how foundation, pillars, planning and production fit together, and phasing. The advice is to nail one channel first and expand only after it works. Measurement leans on WoopSocial post analytics for TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and Bluesky, and on native dashboards everywhere else. If a brand isn't on any of those covered networks, expect to read the native panels by hand — no dashboard will be handed to you. The skill names the objective but doesn't set numbers; `goals-and-kpis` does that.

## Requirements
- Works with: LinkedIn

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill social-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/social-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill social-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill social-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills social-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill social-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/social-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill social-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/social-strategy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick one or two channels instead of six and justify the cuts
- tie the social objective to what the business needs, not follower count
- find a differentiated angle the brand can win with
- set a posting cadence the team can actually keep
- consolidate scattered channels into one phased plan

## Example prompts
- social strategy for a new clothing brand — where do we start
- should we be on TikTok if we never make video
- rebuild our social strategy, we're spread across six platforms

  Use to set a brand's overall social media strategy — which channels to focus on (and which to
  ignore), what to achieve, the angle to win, and a realistic operating cadence. The top-level
  plan that sits above content pillars and the calendar. Run when the user says "social
  strategy," "social media strategy," "which platforms should I be on," "what's my plan,"
  "should I be on TikTok/LinkedIn," or is starting or resetting their social presence. Reads
  brand-profile, audience-research, and content-pillars first. Makes real choices and
  trade-offs — especially what NOT to do — ties goals to the business not vanity metrics, and
  measures covered networks with WoopSocial post analytics (TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Bluesky) and uses native dashboards otherwise.
  Produces a social-strategy.md. It names the objective; to turn it into SMART targets, KPIs,
  and North Star metrics, use goals-and-kpis. Works for any business.

# Social Strategy

This is the top-level plan: which channels, what for, how to win, and at what cadence. It sits
above `content-pillars` (what themes) and `batch-content-plan` (what posts) and tells them where
to point. Everything downstream inherits the choices made here.

The core idea, and what separates strategy from a to-do list:

> **Strategy is choices and trade-offs — above all, what *not* to do.** "Be on every platform,
> post consistently, engage your audience" is not a strategy; it's a list of platitudes that
> spreads a brand thin and wins nowhere. A real strategy picks the few channels where the
> audience is and the brand can win, deliberately drops the rest, and commits to one clear
> objective and a differentiated angle.

## When to use this

- Starting a social presence from scratch, or resetting a scattered one.
- Deciding which platforms to be on (and which to quit).
- Before `content-pillars` / `batch-content-plan`, to set the objective and channels they serve.

**When NOT to use it:** if a current `social-strategy.md` exists and is sound, load it and move
on unless the user wants to revisit.
