# competitor-analysis

A skill that reads the public competitive field on social media and finds the white space a brand can own. Useful before you commit to a content plan.

## What it does

The skill runs the SCOUT framework. First it selects the field: direct, aspirational and adjacent competitors. Then it captures public signals — positioning, pillars, formats, cadence, hooks, tone, visuals, CTAs and paid ads from ad libraries. After that it reads what worked: engagement rate, share of voice, growth trend. Only then does it map the white space, the topic or angle nobody owns.

It reads `brand-profile` and `audience-research` first. Without them it cannot frame gaps against real demand. Findings feed `social-strategy` and `content-pillars`, while publishing your own content goes through `scheduling-and-queue` and WoopSocial.

The scope is strict: public data only, no scraping private surfaces, no fake monitoring accounts, no invented competitor metrics. You cannot see a rival's private analytics or revenue, so estimates come as ranges with stated uncertainty. Cloning a competitor is off the table too — weak strategy and a copyright risk. Do not confuse it with `viral-reverse-engineering`, which tears down a single post, or `audience-research`, which covers your own audience.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill competitor-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/competitor-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill competitor-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill competitor-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills competitor-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill competitor-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/competitor-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill competitor-analysis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/competitor-analysis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a roster of direct and adjacent social competitors
- explain why a rival's format worked instead of counting likes
- find a topic or angle nobody in the niche has claimed
- benchmark engagement and share of voice against your direct set, not platform averages
- turn findings into your own pillars and positioning

## Example prompts
- analyse our social media competitors and show me the white space
- benchmark us against direct competitors on engagement rate and share of voice
- run a competitor SWOT and suggest how we should differentiate

  Competitor analysis for social media — public-data competitive reconnaissance to find the gap a brand can own. Use when someone wants to "analyse/research our
  competitors," "see what rivals are doing on social," "benchmark against competitors," "find content
  gaps / white space," or "do a competitive landscape / SWOT." Reads the PUBLIC competitive field —
  positioning, pillars, formats, cadence, share of voice — to find the gap the brand can own, then
  feeds social-strategy and content-pillars. Reads brand-profile + audience-research first. Advisory
  and public-data only: no scraping private data, no fake monitoring accounts, no fabricated
  competitor metrics, no copying. Distinct from viral-reverse-engineering (single-post teardown) and
  audience-research (your own audience).

# competitor-analysis

The **landscape / positioning** lens — read the public competitive field to find the **white space you
can own**, then differentiate. Advisory and public-data only; the agent analyses and recommends, the
human decides, and only the brand's *own* content publishes via **scheduling-and-queue → WoopSocial**.

## The POV: recon for the gap, not a copy
Most accounts either ignore competitors or mimic them — both lose. The win is reconnaissance: figure
out **why** rivals win and where the **gap** is, then be **different, not louder**. "Who is winning?"
matters far less than "*why*, and how do we do better?" Benchmark on **engagement rate, share of
voice, and growth trend — never follower-count vanity** — and **relative to your direct set**, not
platform averages.

## Read these first
1. **brand-profile** — positioning, pillars, non-negotiables.
2. **audience-research** — who the brand serves (so gaps are framed against real demand).

## The framework: SCOUT
(Depth: `references/the-scout-framework.md`.)
- **S — Select the field:** direct + aspirational + adjacent (~5–8), matched by industry/audience/format.
- **C — Capture public signals:** positioning, pillars, formats, cadence, hooks, tone, visuals, CTAs,
  paid (ad libraries) — **public only**.
- **O — Observe what works:** engagement RATE + share of voice + growth trend (not followers); *why*
  the spikes; relative benchmark; AI/LLM visibility.
