## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through creating SkyPilot task specifications and managing workloads across AWS, GCP, Azure, Lambda, and RunPod. It details multi-node distributed training setups using `torchrun`, gang scheduling, and storage integration for S3 or GCS buckets via `file_mounts`.

The orchestrator searches for the cheapest cloud or region and handles spot instance preemption using `spot_recovery: FAILOVER`. To run these workflows, your environment requires `skypilot>=0.7.0` and verified cloud credentials checked via `sky check`.

For isolated jobs on a single provider, standalone RunPod or Modal avoids the extra configuration SkyPilot introduces.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot-multi-cloud-orchestration -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skypilot/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skypilot/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skypilot/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skypilot/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs skypilot
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skypilot/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 09-infrastructure/skypilot
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skypilot/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill skypilot -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- configure multi-cloud GPU training jobs with automatic spot recovery
- find the cheapest cloud region for A100 or H100 accelerators
- set up distributed multi-node training with torchrun
- mount cloud storage buckets for model checkpoints and datasets

## Example prompts
- Write a SkyPilot task YAML to train a model on 4x A100 GPUs using spot instances
- Show how to mount an S3 bucket for checkpoints in a SkyPilot task
- Generate a multi-node distributed training manifest for torchrun

# SkyPilot Multi-Cloud Orchestration

Comprehensive guide to running ML workloads across clouds with automatic cost optimization using SkyPilot.

## When to use SkyPilot

**Use SkyPilot when:**
- Running ML workloads across multiple clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.)
- Need cost optimization with automatic cloud/region selection
- Running long jobs on spot instances with auto-recovery
- Managing distributed multi-node training
- Want unified interface for 20+ cloud providers
- Need to avoid vendor lock-in

**Key features:**
- **Multi-cloud**: AWS, GCP, Azure, Kubernetes, Lambda, RunPod, 20+ providers
- **Cost optimization**: Automatic cheapest cloud/region selection
- **Spot instances**: 3-6x cost savings with automatic recovery
- **Distributed training**: Multi-node jobs with gang scheduling
- **Managed jobs**: Auto-recovery, checkpointing, fault tolerance
- **Sky Serve**: Model serving with autoscaling

**Use alternatives instead:**
- **Modal**: For simpler serverless GPU with Python-native API
- **RunPod**: For single-cloud persistent pods
- **Kubernetes**: For existing K8s infrastructure
- **Ray**: For pure Ray-based orchestration

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
pip install "skypilot[aws,gcp,azure,kubernetes]"
# Verify cloud credentials
sky check
```

### Hello World

Create `hello.yaml`:
```yaml
resources:
  accelerators: T4:1
run: |
  nvidia-smi
  echo "Hello from SkyPilot!"
```

Launch:
```bash
sky launch -c hello hello.yaml
# SSH to cluster
ssh hello
# Terminate
sky down hello
```

## Core concepts

### Task YAML structure
