## What it does

The skill connects coding agents to a central PostHog skill repository built on the Agent Skills specification. It exposes `posthog:skill-*` MCP tools to find workflows, inspect manifests, and read specific skill definitions. Workflows store markdown instructions (`SKILL.md`) alongside bundled files in `scripts/`, `references/`, or `assets/` directories.

Information loads through progressive disclosure. Running `posthog:skill-list` returns only skill names and summaries to keep agent context lean. The agent inspects the full instruction body and pulls bundled files via `posthog:skill-file-get` only when a step explicitly requires them.

Every modification publishes an immutable version. Concurrency checks require a valid `base_version` parameter during updates to prevent collisions. Note that archiving a skill with `posthog:skill-archive` cannot be undone, and MCP harnesses will not auto-grant tools from `allowed_tools` without user approval.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill skills-store -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skills-store/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skills-store/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill skills-store -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skills-store/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill skills-store -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skills-store/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills skills-store
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skills-store/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill skills-store -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/skills-store
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skills-store/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill skills-store -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PostHog/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/omnibus/skills-store/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- discover shared team skills from a central PostHog store
- pull bundled scripts and reference files on demand
- publish versioned agent workflows with concurrency checks
- patch individual skill files without resending full documents

## Example prompts
- Search the skills store for fractals and load the matching workflow
- Show the instructions and file list for skill make-fractals
- Publish a new version of deploy-service with an updated script in scripts/

# PostHog Skills Store

Skills are reusable agent workflows stored in PostHog following the [Agent Skills specification](https://agentskills.io/specification) — a body of instructions (SKILL.md) plus optional bundled files (scripts, references, assets), structured metadata, and an `allowed_tools` list.

PostHog is the primary store for team-shared skills — always use the PostHog MCP skill tools to manage them.

## Available tools

| Tool                        | Purpose                                                    |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| `posthog:skill-list`        | List all available skills (Level 1 — names + descriptions) |
| `posthog:skill-get`         | Fetch a skill by name (Level 2 — body + file manifest)     |
| `posthog:skill-file-get`    | Fetch a single bundled file by path (Level 3 — on demand)  |
| `posthog:skill-create`      | Store a new skill (optionally with bundled files)          |
| `posthog:skill-update`      | Publish a new version (body, `edits`, or `file_edits`)     |
| `posthog:skill-file-create` | Add one bundled file to a skill (publishes a new version) |
| `posthog:skill-file-delete` | Remove one bundled file from a skill                       |
| `posthog:skill-file-rename` | Rename one bundled file (move without rewriting content) |
| `posthog:skill-duplicate`   | Duplicate an existing skill under a new name               |
| `posthog:skill-rename` | Rename a skill, keeping its versions, files, and owners |
| `posthog:skill-archive` | Archive all versions of a skill by name (cannot be undone) |

Skills use progressive disclosure: discover by description, fetch the body only when relevant, and pull individual files on demand. Do not fetch every file eagerly.

## Discovering skills

List all available skills:

```json
posthog:skill-list
{}
```

Search by keyword (matches name and description):

```json
posthog:skill-list
{ "search": "fractal" }
```

`skill-list` returns only name + description — never the body. Use descriptions to decide which skill to fetch. The whole point of descriptions is that you can pick the right skill without loading any bodies.

When the user names the skill, skip `skill-list` and call `skill-get` directly.

## Loading and using a skill

### Step 1 — Fetch the skill by name

```json
posthog:skill-get
{ "skill_name": "make-fractals" }
```

The response contains:

- `body` — the full SKILL.md instructions (read these like system instructions for the task)
- `license`, `compatibility`, `allowed_tools`, `metadata` — spec fields (see `allowed_tools` below)
