## What it does

This skill kicks in when you describe a task in plain words instead of code: convert markdown to PDF, analyze sentiment in customer reviews, generate API docs from source. The agent builds search keywords, then filters repositories by stars, recent updates, a real README and actual code rather than an awesome-list.

It presents 3–5 candidates and waits for your pick. After that it reads the README, core source files, examples and dependencies, then reports back on the approach, the limitations and what will go into the skill. Only after a second confirmation does the work move to `skill-creator`.

The point is that the skill encodes knowledge from the project instead of wrapping the tool. The result still works with the original repository uninstalled. If the source project carries a restrictive license, the skill advises mentioning that and keeping attribution in the generated file. It is not a package installer and not a tool wrapper.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --skill skill-from-github -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skill-from-github/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --skill skill-from-github -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --skill skill-from-github -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install GBSOSS/skill-from-masters skill-from-github
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --skill skill-from-github -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --path skills/skill-from-github
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GBSOSS/skill-from-masters --skill skill-from-github -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/GBSOSS/skill-from-masters/tree/HEAD/skills/skill-from-github/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find a mature GitHub project for a task described in plain words
- filter out abandoned repos and awesome-lists with no code
- dig into someone else's project down to its algorithm and I/O formats
- turn a studied approach into a reusable skill
- record a project's limitations and pitfalls in the instructions

## Example prompts
- I want to convert markdown to PDF — find a project and build me a skill
- help me analyze sentiment in customer reviews, see what GitHub has
- I need API docs generated from code, find a good project and make a skill

# Skill from GitHub

When users want to accomplish something, search GitHub for quality projects that solve the problem, understand them deeply, then create a skill based on that knowledge.

## When to Use

When users describe a task and you want to find existing tools/projects to learn from:

- "I want to be able to convert markdown to PDF"
- "Help me analyze sentiment in customer reviews"
- "I need to generate API documentation from code"

## Workflow

### Step 1: Understand User Intent

Clarify what the user wants to achieve:
- What is the input?
- What is the expected output?
- Any constraints (language, framework, etc.)?

### Step 2: Search GitHub

Search for projects that solve this problem:

```
{task keywords} language:{preferred} stars:>100 sort:stars
```

**Search tips:**
- Start broad, then narrow down
- Try different keyword combinations
- Include "cli", "tool", "library" if relevant

**Quality filters (must meet ALL):**
- Stars > 100 (community validated)
- Updated within last 12 months (actively maintained)
- Has README with clear documentation
- Has actual code (not just awesome-list)

### Step 3: Present Options to User

Show top 3-5 candidates:

```markdown
## Found X projects that can help
### Option 1: [project-name](github-url)
- Stars: xxx | Last updated: xxx
- What it does: one-line description
- Why it's good: specific strength
### Option 2: ...
Which one should I dive into? Or should I search differently?
```

**Wait for user confirmation before proceeding.**

### Step 4: Deep Dive into Selected Project

Once user selects a project, thoroughly understand it:

1. **Read README** - Understand purpose, features, usage
2. **Read core source files** - Understand how it works
3. **Check examples** - See real usage patterns
4. **Note dependencies** - What it relies on
5. **Identify key concepts** - The mental model behind it

Extract:
- Core algorithm/approach
- Input/output formats
- Error handling patterns
- Best practices encoded in the code

### Step 5: Summarize Understanding

Present what you learned to user:

```markdown
## Understanding [project-name]
### Core Approach
How it solves the problem...
### Key Techniques
1. ...
2. ...
### Limitations
- ...
### What I'll encode in the skill
- ...
Does this look right? Should I proceed to create the skill?
```

**Wait for user confirmation.**

### Step 6: Create Skill via skill-creator

Hand off to skill-creator with:

1. **Clear purpose** - What the skill does
