## What it does

This skill covers AWS Site-to-Site VPN, the managed service that builds an encrypted IPsec tunnel between your on-premises network and AWS. It works as a router: each task points to a file under `references/`, and the agent reads that file in full before acting. The files stand alone — each carries its own decision tables, constraints, procedure and troubleshooting.

Seven tasks are covered: choosing static or dynamic (BGP) routing, creating a connection to a VPC, sizing the tunnel at Standard (1.25 Gbps) or Large (5 Gbps), consolidating many sites through a VPN Concentrator, applying the customer gateway device configuration, building for high availability, and diagnosing a down tunnel with CloudWatch metrics and logs. Settle the routing decision before you create the connection, or you will have to recreate it to change the routing type. The target gateway gates almost everything else: only a transit gateway supports Large tunnels, ECMP bandwidth aggregation, IPv6 customer gateways and the VPN Concentrator.

Commands run through the AWS MCP server when it is connected, with the AWS CLI as the fallback. Site-to-Site VPN is regional, so pass `--region {region}` for the zone where the connection terminates. The configuration AWS hands back after creation is applied by you on your own device — AWS never touches that side. Direct Connect, Client VPN for individual remote users and Route 53 work are out of scope.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill sitetositevpn -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sitetositevpn/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill sitetositevpn -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill sitetositevpn -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws sitetositevpn
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill sitetositevpn -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/sitetositevpn
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill sitetositevpn -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/sitetositevpn/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create an IPsec connection between an office and a VPC
- pick static or dynamic (BGP) routing before building
- size a tunnel at Standard or Large
- consolidate many sites through a VPN Concentrator
- find why a tunnel went down using CloudWatch

## Example prompts
- help me create a Site-to-Site VPN between our data center and a VPC
- which routing should I use, static or BGP, for a connection to a transit gateway
- the tunnel is down, check CloudWatch metrics and tell me what happened

# AWS Site-to-Site VPN

## Overview

Domain expertise for configuring AWS Site-to-Site VPN, the managed service that builds an encrypted
IP Security (IPsec) connection between an on-premises network and AWS. Covers the routing decision
(static versus dynamic (BGP) routing), creating the connection and its dependent resources in the right order,
sizing tunnel bandwidth, consolidating many sites through a VPN Concentrator, applying the customer
gateway device configuration, building for high availability, and monitoring and troubleshooting
tunnels.

This skill is a router. Each customer task maps to a procedure file under `references/`. Read the
matching reference in full before acting, then follow its constraints and steps. The reference
files are self-contained: each carries its own decision tables, constraints, procedure, and
troubleshooting.

Execute commands using the AWS MCP server when connected (sandboxed execution, audit logging,
observability). Fall back to the AWS CLI otherwise. Site-to-Site VPN is a regional service: pass
