# site-crawlability

A technical SEO skill that walks through redirect chains, broken links, orphan pages and what AI crawlers can actually read.

## What it does

The skill covers the technical side of crawling: `robots.txt`, the `X-Robots-Tag` header, site hierarchy and internal linking. It starts by looking at your structure, framework and key paths — sitemap, robots, API, static assets. When a root `contextus.md` exists, it reads that and loads only the modules the task needs; otherwise it works from project material and asks about what is missing.

Then it gets specific. Multi-hop redirects and loops, 4xx links, pages with no incoming links, pagination versus infinite scroll. There is a section on crawl budget too: duplicate URLs, parameter proliferation, traps like faceted filters. For AI crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot the advice is blunt — they do not execute JavaScript, so critical content has to sit in the initial HTML via SSR, ISR or SSG.

One limit matters here: the skill handles crawlability, not link strategy. For that it points you to the `internal-links` skill. It also needs real facts about your project — describe the structure and framework, or the audit stays generic.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill site-crawlability -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill crawlability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/crawlability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/crawlability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill crawlability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/crawlability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill crawlability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/crawlability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills crawlability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/crawlability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill crawlability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/seo/technical/crawlability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/crawlability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill crawlability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/seo/technical/crawlability/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- fix multi-hop redirects and loops
- find pages with no incoming links and wire them up
- move infinite scroll to paginated pages
- cut crawl budget wasted on duplicates and parameters
- serve critical content to AI crawlers without JavaScript

## Example prompts
- check our crawl budget and tell me where it's being wasted
- the catalog uses infinite scroll — make it crawlable
- GPTBot can't see content on category pages, what should I fix

# SEO Technical: Crawlability

Guides crawlability improvements: robots, X-Robots-Tag, site structure, and internal linking.

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1–2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Scope (Technical SEO)

- **Redirect chains & loops**: Fix multi-hop redirects; point directly to final URL
- **Broken links (4xx)**: Fix broken internal/external links; 301 or remove
- **Site architecture**: Logical hierarchy; pages within 3–4 clicks from homepage
- **Orphan pages**: Add internal links to pages with no incoming links
- **Pagination**: Prefer pagination over infinite scroll for crawlability
- **Crawl budget**: Reduce waste on duplicates, redirects, low-value URLs (see below)
- **AI crawler optimization**: SSR for critical content; URL management; reduce 404/redirect waste (see below)

## Initial Assessment

**Project context:** Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only the modules relevant to this task. Without Contextus, use available project material or user-provided facts and ask for missing information; do not create a parallel context system.

Identify:
1. **Site structure**: Flat vs. deep hierarchy
2. **Framework**: Next.js, static, SPA, etc.
3. **Key paths**: Sitemap, robots.txt, API, static assets

## Best Practices

### Redirect Chains & Loops

- Fix multi-hop redirects; point directly to final URL
- Loops: URLs redirecting back to themselves; break the cycle

### Broken Links (4xx)

- Fix broken internal/external links; 301 or remove
- Audit regularly; update or remove broken links

### Site Architecture

| Principle | Guideline |
|-----------|-----------|
| **Depth** | Important pages within 3–4 clicks from homepage |
| **Orphan pages** | Add internal links to pages with no incoming links; see **internal-links** for link strategy |
| **Hierarchy** | Logical structure; hub pages link to content |

### Pagination vs Infinite Scroll
