# shot-composition

Plans how a frame is staged: grid, focal point, depth layers and camera moves. Useful when a scene needs layering and a layout that survives 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1.

## What it does

The skill walks through a frame in order. Set the grid first, then place one focal point on a rule-of-thirds power point, then rank the hierarchy by size, contrast, color and position. From there it splits the scene into three depth layers — background, midground, foreground — and assigns each a parallax speed.

Camera work is its own section: push and pull, pan, follow, parallax. The rule is one move per beat. Push plus pan plus rotation reads as chaos, so the skill makes you pick the single move that serves the beat. Enter and exit directions follow reading direction: new content arrives from the right or below, going back reverses the entrance.

Multi-aspect adaptation is a restack, not a crop. Master in 16:9 with the focal point in the center band, then rebuild for 9:16, keeping text, logos, faces and CTAs inside title-safe margins so platform UI does not cover them. The skill leans on frameworks from `animation-principles` and `motion-art-direction`, so without those installed you fill in some of the reasoning yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill shot-composition -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/shot-composition/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill shot-composition -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill shot-composition -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/motion-design-skills shot-composition
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill shot-composition -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/motion-design-skills --path skills/shot-composition
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/motion-design-skills --skill shot-composition -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/iart-ai/motion-design-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/shot-composition/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lay out a frame on a grid and set the focal point
- decide which edge elements enter and exit through
- split a scene into bg/mid/fg layers for parallax
- pick one camera move per beat instead of stacking three
- restack one composition for 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 without cropping

## Example prompts
- Plan the shot composition for a scene with the logo centered and suggest a grid
- Split this scene into bg/mid/fg and give me parallax speeds for each layer
- Adapt this composition for 9:16 and check that the text stays inside the safe area

# Shot Composition

Stage the frame and move the camera: grid systems, safe areas, focal hierarchy, negative space, parallax layering, and how layout guides the eye over time. Produces composition notes, layer structure (bg/mid/fg), and concrete camera-move plans with numbers.

## When to use

- Defining a frame's layout, focal point, and negative space.
- Planning element enter/exit directions and motion paths.
- Designing camera push/pull, pan, follow, and parallax moves.
- Adapting one composition across 16:9, 9:16, and 1:1 with safe areas.

## Decision tree

```
What are you staging?
├─ A static frame's layout
│   └─ set grid → place ONE focal point on a thirds power point
│      → rank hierarchy (size>contrast>color>position) → reserve negative space
├─ Where things enter / leave
│   └─ follow reading direction; nearest edge; ease-out in, ease-in out
│      (new content → from right/below; back/undo → reverse it)
├─ A sense of depth / a camera move
│   └─ split into bg/mid/fg layers (the three motion layers)
│      → ONE camera move per beat (push | pan | follow | parallax), ease-in-out
└─ One comp across aspects (16:9 / 9:16 / 1:1)
    └─ master in 16:9, focal in the center band → RESTACK (don't crop) for 9:16
       → keep critical content inside title-safe margins
```

**Cross-reference — apply the shared frameworks.** This skill is the spatial half of `animation-principles`. Apply them explicitly:

- **1/3 Rule** (`animation-principles`) has two forms and this skill uses both *spatially*: (a) *Composition thirds* — place the focal point on a rule-of-thirds power point (33%/67%); (b) *Distance* — no element travels more than ~1/3 of the frame without an intermediate keyframe or a scale/opacity change, so entrances stay readable.
