## What it does

This skill equips coding agents with developer rules for the entire Shopify surface. It supports Admin API queries, Storefront GraphQL, Shopify Functions, Liquid themes, Hydrogen storefronts, and Polaris UI extensions. The routing activates even without the brand name when prompts mention metafields, metaobjects, or spinning up store setups via mock.shop.

The skill enforces an automated workflow using bundled terminal helpers. The agent consults topic guides in `references/`, searches developer documentation with `scripts/search_docs.mjs`, and tests generated code against `scripts/validate.mjs`.

Running the bundled `.mjs` scripts requires Node.js installed in the local environment. Helpers must be invoked using absolute paths, and when code validation fails, the agent is restricted to three targeted fix attempts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --skill shopify -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/shopify/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/shopify/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --skill shopify -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/shopify/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --skill shopify -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/shopify/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit shopify
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/shopify/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --skill shopify -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --path skills/shopify
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/shopify/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit --skill shopify -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit/tree/HEAD/skills/shopify/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate validated GraphQL operations for Shopify Admin and Storefront APIs
- audit shopify.app.toml and shopify.extension.toml configuration files
- build UI extensions for checkout and admin pages using Polaris
- write Liquid templates and headless storefront code in Hydrogen

## Example prompts
- Write an Admin GraphQL mutation to update product inventory by SKU
- Audit my shopify.app.toml config and list the CLI commands to deploy
- Build a custom Polaris checkout extension for post-purchase upsells

You have a `bash` tool. Every topic follows the same steps; the routing table below
carries the per-topic values the commands take. The bundled `.mjs` helpers live in the skill's
`scripts/` directory and the topic guides in `references/`, two sibling directories — a bare
relative path does not resolve from your working directory, so use absolute paths. Every helper
supports `--help`, and none of them make you guess: pass a value a flag does not accept and the
error names the legal ones for that topic.

1. **Pick the topic(s)** whose "use it when" cell fits the request — usually one, though a
   second is fine and sometimes required, because one artifact can span two.

2. **Read the topic's reference file** before writing anything:

   ```
   cat references/<topic>.md
   ```

   That file is the topic's instruction set, not a lookup for when you get stuck: it carries the
   rules that decide whether your answer is right, including ones the validators do not enforce.

3. **Search before writing anything**, with the flags from the topic's `search` cell:

   ```
   scripts/search_docs.mjs "<query>" <search-cell> --topic <topic> --model YOUR_MODEL_NAME --client-name YOUR_CLIENT_NAME --client-version YOUR_CLIENT_VERSION
   ```

   Replace `<search-cell>` with the cell's flags: fill anything in `<angle brackets>`, and a
   bracketed `[--version …]` is optional — pass it when the developer names a version **or the
   project configures one** (an app or extension TOML, a pinned client), in which case use the
   project's; omitted, it resolves to the latest stable. Do not invent one. A cell of
