## What it does

The skill acts as an operational router across AWS Shield Advanced procedures. It helps protect CloudFront distributions, Application and Network Load Balancers, Elastic IPs, Global Accelerator, and Route 53 hosted zones. When guided by the agent, it pulls specific steps from `references/` to configure automatic layer 7 mitigation through AWS WAF or group resources for monitoring. Protection groups handle detection only, without applying shared mitigation rules.

Execution relies on the AWS MCP server or the AWS CLI. Because Shield Advanced is a global service, control-plane API calls run in `us-east-1`, so every `aws shield` command must pass `--region us-east-1`. Skipping this region flag causes API calls to fail immediately.

Note that Shield Advanced requires a paid one-year commitment. The skill connects components together, but delegates authoring WAF rules and Route 53 health checks to separate skills. Proactive engagement by the Shield Response Team requires a working Route 53 health check on the target resource.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill shieldadvanced -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/shieldadvanced/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill shieldadvanced -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill shieldadvanced -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws shieldadvanced
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill shieldadvanced -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/shieldadvanced
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill shieldadvanced -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/shieldadvanced/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- subscribe an account and protect CloudFront or ALB resources
- configure automatic layer 7 DDoS mitigation via AWS WAF
- link Route 53 health checks for health-based detection
- prepare requests for attack-driven scaling cost credits
- aggregate multiple resources into Shield protection groups

## Example prompts
- Subscribe this account to Shield Advanced and protect our CloudFront distribution
- Enable automatic layer 7 DDoS mitigation with AWS WAF for our ALB
- Check DDoS event logs and prepare a cost protection credit request

# AWS Shield Advanced

## Overview

Domain expertise for configuring AWS Shield Advanced, the paid tier that adds enhanced Distributed
Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, automatic application layer mitigation, attack visibility, expert support, and
cost protection on top of the always-on AWS Shield Standard. Covers subscribing and protecting
resources, automatic application layer mitigation, health-based detection, Shield Response Team
(SRT) access and proactive engagement, event review and cost protection credits, and protection
groups.

This skill is a router. Each customer task maps to a procedure file under `references/`. Read the
matching reference in full before acting, then follow its constraints and steps. The reference
files are self-contained: each carries its own decision tables, constraints, procedure, and
troubleshooting.

Execute commands using the AWS MCP server when connected (sandboxed execution, audit logging,
observability). Fall back to the AWS CLI otherwise. Shield Advanced is a global service: its
control-plane API calls run in `us-east-1`, so pass `--region us-east-1` on every `aws shield`
command.
