## What it does

The `shell` skill holds 49 rules in nine categories, ranked from critical to stylistic. Safety, portability, error handling, variables, quoting, function structure, conditionals, performance, formatting. Every rule comes with an explanation and a pair of examples: the wrong version and the right one.

The agent reaches for it when you write a new script, audit an old one for vulnerabilities, or move code between Linux, macOS and a container. Triggers include `bash`, `sh`, `POSIX`, `ShellCheck`, `set -euo pipefail`. It also covers `RUN` lines in a Dockerfile, Makefile recipes, CI scripts, cron jobs and systemd `ExecStart` directives.

Rules live in separate files under `references/`, so the agent loads one section instead of the whole guide. Install is a single `npx skills` command; GitHub Copilot gets its own `gh skill install` path. Behind a proxy or a private npm mirror, set that in your npm config rather than passing flags on the install line.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill shell -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/shell/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/shell/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill shell -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/shell/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill shell -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/shell/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills shell
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/shell/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill shell -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/shell
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/shell/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill shell -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/.experimental/shell/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch command injection in a script that takes outside arguments
- strip bashisms out of a script that has to run under POSIX sh
- add strict mode so a mid-pipeline failure stops the run
- fix a script that dies quietly and writes nothing to stderr
- clean up quoting and argument parsing in legacy code

## Example prompts
- Rewrite this script following the shell skill rules — fix the quoting and add strict mode
- Check my `deploy.sh` for command injection and portability problems
- Review the `RUN` line in this Dockerfile against the shell rules

# Shell Scripts Best Practices (Community)

Comprehensive best practices guide for shell scripting, designed for AI agents and LLMs. Contains 49 rules across 9 categories, prioritized by impact from critical (safety, portability) to incremental (style). Each rule includes detailed explanations, real-world examples comparing incorrect vs. correct implementations, and specific impact metrics.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing new bash or POSIX shell scripts
- Reviewing shell scripts for security vulnerabilities
- Debugging scripts that fail silently or behave unexpectedly
- Porting scripts between Linux, macOS, and containers
- Optimizing shell script performance
- Setting up CI/CD pipelines with shell scripts

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix | Rules |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|-------|
| 1 | Safety & Security | CRITICAL | `safety-` | 6 |
| 2 | Portability | CRITICAL | `port-` | 5 |
| 3 | Error Handling | HIGH | `err-` | 8 |
| 4 | Variables & Data | HIGH | `var-` | 5 |
| 5 | Quoting & Expansion | MEDIUM-HIGH | `quote-` | 6 |
| 6 | Functions & Structure | MEDIUM | `func-` | 5 |
| 7 | Testing & Conditionals | MEDIUM | `test-` | 5 |
| 8 | Performance | LOW-MEDIUM | `perf-` | 6 |
| 9 | Style & Formatting | LOW | `style-` | 3 |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Safety & Security (CRITICAL)

- [`safety-command-injection`](references/safety-command-injection.md) - Prevent command injection from user input
- [`safety-eval-avoidance`](references/safety-eval-avoidance.md) - Avoid eval for dynamic commands
- [`safety-absolute-paths`](references/safety-absolute-paths.md) - Use absolute paths for external commands
- [`safety-temp-files`](references/safety-temp-files.md) - Create secure temporary files
- [`safety-suid-forbidden`](references/safety-suid-forbidden.md) - Never use SUID/SGID on shell scripts
- [`safety-argument-injection`](references/safety-argument-injection.md) - Prevent argument injection with double dash

### 2. Portability (CRITICAL)

- [`port-shebang-selection`](references/port-shebang-selection.md) - Choose shebang based on portability needs
- [`port-avoid-bashisms`](references/port-avoid-bashisms.md) - Avoid bashisms in POSIX scripts
- [`port-printf-over-echo`](references/port-printf-over-echo.md) - Use printf instead of echo for portability
- [`port-export-syntax`](references/port-export-syntax.md) - Use portable export syntax
