## What it does

This skill provides schema design rules for TimescaleDB and Tiger Cloud. It targets append-only patterns where records are inserted frequently and rarely changed, such as sensor telemetry, application logs, and payment records. When prompted, the agent generates `CREATE TABLE` definitions with the `WITH (tsdb.hypertable...)` parameter block.

The guidelines dictate how to pick columns for `segmentby` and `orderby`. Single-column `segmentby` is preferred, requiring row density of over 100 rows per value per chunk. For low-density columns, the skill instructs the agent to prepend them to `orderby` instead, preserving sequential similarity for compression. It also configures `minmax` sparse indexes for range queries on compressed batches.

Running this setup requires PostgreSQL 15 or newer with TimescaleDB installed. If your table includes vector columns from `pgvector`, you must disable columnstore compression because vector indexes conflict with Timescale columnstore. Check your schema for embeddings before enabling columnstore to avoid broken indexes.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill setup-timescaledb-hypertables -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill setup-timescaledb-hypertables -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill setup-timescaledb-hypertables -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install timescale/pg-aiguide setup-timescaledb-hypertables
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill setup-timescaledb-hypertables -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/timescale/pg-aiguide --path skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/setup-timescaledb-hypertables/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill setup-timescaledb-hypertables -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- design TimescaleDB hypertables for streaming metrics or event logs
- select segmentby and orderby columns for optimal compression
- configure minmax sparse indexes for range queries on compressed data
- avoid index incompatibilities between pgvector and TimescaleDB columnstore

## Example prompts
- Design a TimescaleDB hypertable for IoT sensor readings with temperature and humidity
- Set up an event log schema with compression and segmentby service_name
- Help me write a CREATE TABLE statement for append-only financial transaction data

# TimescaleDB Complete Setup

Instructions for insert-heavy data patterns where data is inserted but rarely changed:

- **Time-series data** (sensors, metrics, system monitoring)
- **Event logs** (user events, audit trails, application logs)
- **Transaction records** (orders, payments, financial transactions)
- **Sequential data** (records with auto-incrementing IDs and timestamps)
- **Append-only datasets** (immutable records, historical data)

## Step 1: Create Hypertable

```sql
CREATE TABLE your_table_name (
    timestamp TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL,
    entity_id TEXT NOT NULL,          -- device_id, user_id, symbol, etc.
    category TEXT,                    -- sensor_type, event_type, asset_class, etc.
    value_1 DOUBLE PRECISION,         -- price, temperature, latency, etc.
    value_2 DOUBLE PRECISION,         -- volume, humidity, throughput, etc.
    value_3 INTEGER,                  -- count, status, level, etc.
    metadata JSONB                    -- flexible additional data
) WITH (
    tsdb.hypertable,
    tsdb.partition_column='timestamp',
