# setup-arxiv-mcp

Sets up an academic paper search MCP server through Docker MCP and records its tools in CLAUDE.md. Use it when an agent needs to search or read research papers.

## What it does

The skill first asks where the configuration should live: the shared project `CLAUDE.md`, a local `CLAUDE.local.md`, or `~/.claude/CLAUDE.md` for all projects. For a local file, it checks `.gitignore`. It then tests whether Docker MCP can be reached with `mcp-find`.

It finds and activates `paper-search` for literature search. Its tools cover arXiv, PubMed, bioRxiv, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, IACR, and CrossRef, with options to search, download, and read papers. Downloads go to `./downloads`.

The guide flags an EOF initialization failure in the regular `arxiv-mcp-server`, so `paper-search` is the sensible route here. Docker Desktop and a connected Docker MCP are prerequisites. The dedicated arXiv server also needs a `storage_path` for downloaded papers.
