## What it does

For Omni, the skill walks through creating a Domain and Space, setting access, bringing in telemetry, and instrumenting an app or AI agent with the ADOT SDK. It also covers Azure telemetry ingestion and connecting Slack to a Space. For Application Signals, it guides service onboarding with ADOT auto-instrumentation, the EKS add-on, and CI/CD git and deployment metadata.

Omni and Application Signals use different instrumentation paths, which cannot be enabled on the same workload. Choose the product first; Application Signals settings conflict with the Omni instrumentation path on that workload. This skill covers initial setup. For queries, dashboards, or alerts after setup, use `aws-observability`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, GitHub, Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill setting-up-cloudwatch-observability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill setting-up-cloudwatch-observability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill setting-up-cloudwatch-observability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws setting-up-cloudwatch-observability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill setting-up-cloudwatch-observability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/operations-skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/setting-up-cloudwatch-observability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill setting-up-cloudwatch-observability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- create a Domain and Space for CloudWatch Omni
- set access to telemetry in a Space
- instrument an app for Omni with the ADOT SDK
- onboard a service to Application Signals
- pass git and deployment metadata through CI/CD

## Example prompts
- Set up CloudWatch Omni for this app and walk me through creating its Domain and Space before sending telemetry.
- Onboard this EKS service to Application Signals and show me the configuration changes.
- Explain how to pass this service's git and deployment metadata into ServiceEvents through CI/CD.

  agent with the plain ADOT SDK so traces reach Omni (Python/Node/Java/.NET on EC2/ECS/EKS/Lambda), incl.
  no-image-rebuild and .NET CoreCLR vars; ingesting Azure telemetry via the CloudWatch agent on an
  Azure VM or AKS; connecting Slack to a Space; whether GitHub or a custom MCP tool server (HTTP/stdio; API

  auto-instrumentation, the amazon-cloudwatch-observability add-on, monitored service, reporting telemetry,

# Setting Up CloudWatch Observability

> **Scope:** First-time CloudWatch observability setup, for **both** products — a CloudWatch Application Observability (Omni) Space from creation through first traces flowing, **and** onboarding a service to classic CloudWatch **Application Signals**. For using what is already set up (queries, dashboards, alarms, Omni alerts, evaluations, live debugging), route to **aws-observability**.

## Two products, two reference folders

This skill owns *setup* for two products that share the CloudWatch name but are separate services. The folder a reference lives in is the signal for which product it belongs to — the same convention `aws-observability` uses:

| Folder | Product | What setup means there |
|---|---|---|
| `references/cloudwatch-omni/` | CloudWatch Omni (Application / Agent Observability) | Domain → Space → grants → telemetry in → **plain ADOT SDK** instrumentation. No add-on, no CloudWatch Agent `application_signals` config, no port 4316. |
| `references/cloudwatch/` | Classic CloudWatch | Onboarding a service to **Application Signals**: ADOT *auto*-instrumentation, the `amazon-cloudwatch-observability` EKS add-on, the CloudWatch Agent, monitored service, ServiceEvents, CI/CD git/deployment metadata, port 4316. |
```
