## What it does

The skill covers fitting a long conversation into a context window without losing what matters. It walks through summarization, embedding-based retrieval and context management, with Python examples built on LangChain and the Anthropic SDK.

The samples show `ConversationSummaryBufferMemory` with a token limit, a `ProgressiveCompressor` class with compression thresholds, and prompt caching via `cache_control`. There is also a section on context windows and token estimation: roughly 4 characters per token for English text, 3 for code.

The skill is marked `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so you cannot call it directly — it is reference material. The examples assume an Anthropic API key and the LangChain libraries, so the code will not run without them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill session-compression -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/session-compression/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/session-compression/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill session-compression -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/session-compression/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill session-compression -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/session-compression/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills session-compression
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/session-compression/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill session-compression -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/ai/techniques/session-compression
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/session-compression/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill session-compression -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- fit a 100-turn conversation into a context window
- cut token spend on long-running chat sessions
- keep key facts when summarizing older messages
- pick the threshold that triggers compression
- speed up responses with a shorter context

## Example prompts
- show me how to set up ConversationSummaryBufferMemory with a 2000 token limit
- help me write a ProgressiveCompressor with thresholds 0.70, 0.85 and 0.95
- how do I enable prompt caching with cache_control in the Anthropic SDK

# AI Session Compression Techniques

## Summary

**Compress long AI conversations to fit context windows while preserving critical information.**

Session compression enables production AI applications to manage multi-turn conversations efficiently by reducing token usage by 70-95% through summarization, embedding-based retrieval, and intelligent context management. Achieve 3-20x compression ratios with minimal performance degradation.

**Key Benefits:**
- **Cost Reduction:** 80-90% token cost savings through hierarchical memory
- **Performance:** 2x faster responses with compressed context
- **Scalability:** Handle conversations exceeding 1M tokens
- **Quality:** Preserve critical information with <2% accuracy loss

## When to Use

**Use session compression when:**
- Multi-turn conversations approach context window limits (>50% capacity)
- Long-running chat sessions (customer support, tutoring, code assistants)
- Token costs become significant (high-volume applications)
- Response latency increases due to large context
- Managing conversation history across multiple sessions

**Don't use when:**
- Short conversations (<10 turns) fitting easily in context
- Every detail must be preserved verbatim (legal, compliance)
- Single-turn or stateless interactions
- Context window usage is <30%

**Ideal scenarios:**
- Chatbots with 50+ turn conversations
- AI code assistants tracking long development sessions
- Customer support with multi-session ticket history
- Educational tutors with student progress tracking
- Multi-day collaborative AI workflows

## Quick Start

### Basic Setup with LangChain

```python
from langchain.memory import ConversationSummaryBufferMemory
from langchain_anthropic import ChatAnthropic
from anthropic import Anthropic
# Initialize Claude client
llm = ChatAnthropic(
    model="claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022",
    api_key="your-api-key"
)
# Setup memory with automatic summarization
memory = ConversationSummaryBufferMemory(
    llm=llm,
    max_token_limit=2000,  # Summarize when exceeding this
    return_messages=True
)
# Add conversation turns
memory.save_context(
    {"input": "What's session compression?"},
    {"output": "Session compression reduces conversation token usage..."}
)
# Retrieve compressed context
context = memory.load_memory_variables({})
```
