# sequelize

A skill that gives your agent rules for writing Sequelize code: models, associations, migrations and queries. Useful for Node.js projects on a relational database.

## What it does

The skill covers how to write Sequelize code — the promise-based ORM for Node.js and TypeScript. It walks through database connection, model definitions with `DataTypes`, all three association types (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many) and queries built with `Op` operators. Your agent gets ready templates and follows them instead of inventing a structure from scratch.

A separate section covers migrations: schema changes in production should go through them rather than model sync. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite and Microsoft SQL Server are supported, and the dialect is set when you create the `Sequelize` instance.

The skill is text only and adds no code to your project. It runs in Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode — the file lands in that platform's skills directory. The model templates assume TypeScript with `InferAttributes` and `InferCreationAttributes`, so on plain JavaScript you will rewrite them.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill sequelize -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sequelize/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sequelize/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill sequelize -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sequelize/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill sequelize -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sequelize/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills sequelize
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sequelize/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill sequelize -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path sequelize
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sequelize/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill sequelize -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/sequelize/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a model with typed fields and validation
- link tables with `hasMany` and `belongsTo`
- build a query with `Op.or` and `Op.like`
- set up a connection pool to PostgreSQL
- move schema changes into migrations

## Example prompts
- write a Sequelize User model with email validation
- link Post and Tag with belongsToMany through PostTags
- rewrite this query in Sequelize using Op operators

# Sequelize Development Guidelines

You are an expert in Sequelize ORM, Node.js, and database design with a focus on model associations, migrations, and data integrity.

## Core Principles

- Sequelize is a promise-based ORM for Node.js and TypeScript
- Supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, and Microsoft SQL Server
- Uses model definitions with DataTypes for schema declaration
- Provides comprehensive support for associations, transactions, and hooks
- Migrations should be used for all schema changes in production

## Database Connection

### Basic Setup

```typescript
import { Sequelize } from "sequelize";
// Option 1: Connection URI
const sequelize = new Sequelize(process.env.DATABASE_URL!, {
  dialect: "postgres",
  logging: process.env.NODE_ENV === "development" ? console.log : false,
  pool: {
    max: 10,
    min: 0,
    acquire: 30000,
    idle: 10000,
  },
});
// Option 2: Individual parameters
const sequelize = new Sequelize({
  dialect: "postgres",
  host: process.env.DB_HOST,
  port: parseInt(process.env.DB_PORT || "5432"),
  username: process.env.DB_USERNAME,
  password: process.env.DB_PASSWORD,
  database: process.env.DB_NAME,
  logging: false,
});
// Test connection
async function testConnection() {
  try {
    await sequelize.authenticate();
    console.log("Connection established successfully.");
  } catch (error) {
    console.error("Unable to connect to the database:", error);
  }
}
```

## Model Definition

### Basic Model with TypeScript

```typescript
import {
  Model,
  DataTypes,
  InferAttributes,
  InferCreationAttributes,
  CreationOptional,
} from "sequelize";
import { sequelize } from "./database";
class User extends Model<InferAttributes<User>, InferCreationAttributes<User>> {
  declare id: CreationOptional<number>;
  declare email: string;
  declare name: string | null;
  declare isActive: CreationOptional<boolean>;
  declare createdAt: CreationOptional<Date>;
  declare updatedAt: CreationOptional<Date>;
}
User.init(
  {
    id: {
      type: DataTypes.INTEGER,
      autoIncrement: true,
      primaryKey: true,
    },
    email: {
      type: DataTypes.STRING(255),
      allowNull: false,
      unique: true,
      validate: {
        isEmail: true,
      },
    },
    name: {
      type: DataTypes.STRING(255),
      allowNull: true,
    },
    isActive: {
      type: DataTypes.BOOLEAN,
      defaultValue: true,
    },
    createdAt: DataTypes.DATE,
    updatedAt: DataTypes.DATE,
  },
  {
    sequelize,
    tableName: "users",
    modelName: "User",
    underscored: true, // Use snake_case for column names
  }
);
export { User };
```

### Data Types Reference

```typescript
// String types
DataTypes.STRING(255)      // VARCHAR(255)
````
