## What it does

The skill drives the SEOmator command-line tool, which checks pages against 373 rules in 20 categories: canonical tags, performance, broken links, Schema.org markup, security headers, accessibility, hreflang, AI search readiness. You get an overall score from 0 to 100 with a letter grade, per-category pass/warn/fail counts, and affected URLs with suggested fixes.

Node.js 20.3 or newer and npm are required; the tool itself comes from `npm install -g @seomator/seo-audit`. A Chrome or Chromium install matters only for Core Web Vitals and JS rendering checks. The skill's `allowed-tools` is narrowed to `Bash(seomator:*)`, so the agent can call the auditor and nothing else.

Some checks stay unmeasured unless you pass the matching flag. Click depth and inbound internal links need `--crawl`; mobile-first parity needs `--mobile`. Skipping the browser with `--no-cwv` makes a run faster, and Core Web Vitals, JS errors and mobile parity then report as unmeasured instead of passing. For agents there is `--format llm`, XML that comes out smaller than JSON.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seo-audit -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seomator-seo-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/seomator-seo-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/seomator-seo-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seomator-seo-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/seomator-seo-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seomator-seo-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/seomator-seo-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install seo-skills/seo-audit-skill seomator-seo-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/seomator-seo-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seomator-seo-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/seo-skills/seo-audit-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/seomator-seo-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add seo-skills/seo-audit-skill --skill seomator-seo-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/seo-skills/seo-audit-skill/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch broken links and redirect chains on a site
- compare site state before and after a release
- find pages with missing or conflicting canonical URLs
- check security headers and SSL certificate expiry
- assess how ready a site is for AI search and bot access

## Example prompts
- Audit `example.com` with seomator and list the critical issues
- Compare two audits of the domain and tell me what changed after the deploy
- Run the audit with `--crawl` and `--mobile` and give me the llm-format report
