## What it does

This skill supplies an actionable checklist for technical SEO audits directly in your AI coding environment. It checks `<title>` tags for 50-60 character limits, unique descriptions between 120 and 155 characters, and Open Graph cards with 1200x630px preview images. It also inspects structured data schema types such as `Article`, `Product`, and `FAQPage`, alongside rules for `robots.txt` and `sitemap.xml`.

The checklist evaluates performance against Core Web Vitals benchmarks: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, and CLS below 0.1. It flags redirect chains, orphan pages, missing `alt` attributes, and heading hierarchy flaws like multiple `h1` elements. Quick `curl` commands are provided to inspect server headers and status codes.

Static checks cannot verify final SERP rendering. Validating rich snippets still requires testing URLs through tools like Google Rich Results Test or Search Console.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill seo-auditing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/seo-auditing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/seo-auditing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill seo-auditing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/seo-auditing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill seo-auditing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/seo-auditing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills seo-auditing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/seo-auditing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill seo-auditing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --path resources/seo-auditing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/seo-auditing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill seo-auditing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- spot missing meta descriptions and duplicate `<title>` tags
- validate JSON-LD structured data and Open Graph image tags
- audit `robots.txt` rules and `sitemap.xml` size limits
- detect redirect chains, 404 errors, and orphan pages
- check image `alt` attributes and heading hierarchy

## Example prompts
- Audit meta tags and Open Graph configuration on the landing page using seo-auditing
- Inspect our robots.txt and sitemap.xml for crawlability and indexing issues
- Check article components for valid JSON-LD schema and image alt attributes

# SEO Auditing

Check and fix technical SEO issues in a web project.

## Audit Checklist

### 1. Meta Tags

Every page must have:

```html
<head>
  <title>Page Title — Site Name</title>
  <meta name="description" content="155 chars max, compelling summary" />
  <link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/page" />
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" />
</head>
```

Check for:
- [ ] Unique `<title>` per page (50-60 chars)
- [ ] Unique `<meta description>` per page (120-155 chars)
- [ ] Canonical URL set (avoids duplicate content)
- [ ] No `noindex` on pages that should be indexed

### 2. Open Graph & Social

```html
<meta property="og:title" content="Page Title" />
<meta property="og:description" content="Description for social sharing" />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og-image.png" />
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page" />
<meta property="og:type" content="website" />
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
```

- OG image should be 1200x630px
- Test with https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/ and https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validator

### 3. Structured Data (JSON-LD)

Add schema markup for rich search results:

```html
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "headline": "Article Title",
  "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Author Name" },
  "datePublished": "2026-04-10",
  "image": "https://example.com/image.jpg"
}
</script>
```

Common types: `Article`, `Product`, `FAQPage`, `Organization`, `BreadcrumbList`

Test with: https://search.google.com/test/rich-results

### 4. Sitemap

`/sitemap.xml` should:
- List all indexable pages
- Include `<lastmod>` dates
- Exclude pages with `noindex`
- Be under 50MB / 50,000 URLs per file
- Be referenced in `robots.txt`

### 5. Robots.txt

`/robots.txt` should:
```
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /api/
Disallow: /admin/
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml
```

- Not block CSS/JS files (search engines need them to render)
- Not block pages you want indexed

### 6. Performance (Core Web Vitals)

| Metric | Good | Needs Work |
|--------|------|------------|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | < 2.5s | > 4.0s |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | < 200ms | > 500ms |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | < 0.1 | > 0.25 |

Key fixes:
- Compress and lazy-load images
- Preload critical fonts and CSS
- Avoid layout shifts from dynamic content
