## What it does

The skill splits AI search visibility into five layers. First comes extractable structure: a short direct answer at the top of a section, question-shaped headings, tables and numbered steps. Then citation worthiness — original data, specific numbers, a credentialed author, publish and update dates. Structured data, AI crawler access and entity signals such as Wikidata and consistent NAP follow.

The workflow is stepwise: audit the site against those layers, list priority queries, check whether the major AI products cite you, work out why you lose to the sources they do cite, then fix pages. There is a separate pass on `llms.txt` at the site root and on `robots.txt` with an explicit call on GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and PerplexityBot. Blocking crawlers by default works against you when visibility matters.

This stacks on top of ordinary SEO rather than replacing it — for on-page, technical and keyword work it points you at other skills. One weak spot: content rendered only on the client. Many AI crawlers render less reliably than Googlebot, so that markup has to move server-side.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill seo-aeo-geo -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/seo-aeo-geo/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill seo-aeo-geo -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill seo-aeo-geo -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rampstackco/claude-skills seo-aeo-geo
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill seo-aeo-geo -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills --path skills/seo-aeo-geo
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill seo-aeo-geo -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/seo-aeo-geo/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an llms.txt listing the site and its key URLs
- check whether AI search answers cite the site
- rewrite sections so the answer lands in the first lines
- add schema.org types and fill recommended properties
- decide which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt

## Example prompts
- audit my site against the five AEO layers and tell me what's missing
- build an llms.txt for the blog and list the key pages
- why doesn't AI search cite my pricing article?

# AEO and GEO

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Make content discoverable, extractable, and citable by AI search experiences.

This skill encodes principles. AI search products evolve fast. The principles age slower than the products.

---

## When to use

- Optimizing content for AI overviews and generative answer engines
- Building or updating llms.txt
- Structuring content so AI assistants can extract and cite it correctly
- Future-proofing a site as search shifts from blue links to AI answers
- Auditing whether existing content is AI-friendly
- Adding signals that help AI assistants identify the site as a trustworthy source

## When NOT to use

- Traditional on-page or technical SEO (use `seo-onpage` or `seo-technical`)
- Keyword research (use `seo-keyword`)
- Off-page authority and link building (use `seo-offpage`)

This skill stacks on top of those. Strong AEO/GEO requires strong fundamental SEO underneath.

---

## Required inputs

- The site or page to optimize
- The topic area or query types AI should cite the site for
- Access to inspect rendered HTML and structured data

---

## The framework: 5 layers

AI search visibility comes from five stacked layers. Each layer compounds.

### 1. Extractable content structure

AI systems extract facts and pull citations from content. Make extraction easy.

- **Direct answers.** Open major sections with a definitive 1 to 3 sentence answer to the question that section addresses. AI extracts the first answer it sees.
- **Question-headers.** Use H2s and H3s phrased as questions when natural. Mirrors how people prompt AI.
