# sentry-react-sdk

Walks a React project through full Sentry setup: it scans your dependencies, proposes a feature set, and writes the config. Useful when you want error monitoring wired up without reading the docs end to end.

## What it does

The skill runs in three phases. First it reads `package.json` and build configs: React version, whether `@sentry/react` is already there, the router, Redux, Vite or webpack, logging libraries. Then it proposes a concrete set — error monitoring and tracing it treats as the baseline for a React SPA, Session Replay it adds for apps with login or checkout flows, and logging and profiling it leaves optional. From there it walks the steps: install the package, create a separate `src/instrument.ts` with `Sentry.init()`, import that file as the first line of your entry point.

Templates cover the common build tools. Vite reads the DSN from `VITE_SENTRY_DSN`, Create React App from `REACT_APP_SENTRY_DSN`, custom webpack from `SENTRY_DSN`. On React 19 the skill wires `reactErrorHandler()` into `createRoot`; older versions get `Sentry.ErrorBoundary`. If it finds React Router in Framework mode with `@sentry/react-router`, it hands off to `sentry-react-router-framework-sdk` — that case is out of scope here.

Profiling is flagged as experimental and needs cross-origin isolation headers, so turn it on deliberately. The `tracesSampleRate: 1.0` and `replaysSessionSampleRate: 0.1` values in the template are a starting point; the skill advises lowering the tracing rate for production. Check the current Sentry docs before you implement, since the APIs move.

## Requirements
- Works with: Sentry

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-react-sdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentry-react-sdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-react-sdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-react-sdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getsentry/sentry-for-ai sentry-react-sdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-react-sdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai --path skills-legacy/sentry-react-sdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-react-sdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills-legacy/sentry-react-sdk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add error monitoring to a React app
- trace page loads and route navigation
- record a session around a user error
- split the Sentry config across Vite, CRA and custom webpack
- hook up React 19 error handling with `reactErrorHandler()`

## Example prompts
- Add Sentry to my React app
- Set up error monitoring and tracing for my Vite project
- Configure Session Replay and logging in my React app

# Sentry React SDK

Opinionated wizard that scans your React project and guides you through complete Sentry setup.

## Invoke This Skill When

- User asks to "add Sentry to React" or "set up Sentry" in a React app
- User wants error monitoring, tracing, session replay, profiling, or logging in React
- User mentions `@sentry/react`, React Sentry SDK, or Sentry error boundaries
- User wants to monitor React Router v5/v6/v7 non-framework navigation, Redux state, or component performance

If project is React Router **Framework mode** using `@sentry/react-router`, use `sentry-react-router-framework-sdk` instead of this skill.

> **Note:** SDK versions and APIs below reflect current Sentry docs at time of writing (`@sentry/react` ≥8.0.0).
> Always verify against [docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/react/](https://docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/react/) before implementing.

## Phase 1: Detect

Run these commands to understand the project before making any recommendations:

```bash
# Detect React version
cat package.json | grep -E '"react"|"react-dom"'
# Check for existing Sentry
cat package.json | grep '"@sentry/'
# Detect router and framework mode hints
cat package.json | grep -E '"react-router-dom"|"react-router"|"@react-router/"|"@tanstack/react-router"|"@sentry/react-router"'
# Detect state management
cat package.json | grep -E '"redux"|"@reduxjs/toolkit"'
# Detect build tool
ls vite.config.ts vite.config.js webpack.config.js craco.config.js 2>/dev/null
cat package.json | grep -E '"vite"|"react-scripts"|"webpack"'
# Detect logging libraries
cat package.json | grep -E '"pino"|"winston"|"loglevel"'
# Check for companion backend in adjacent directories
ls ../backend ../server ../api 2>/dev/null
