## What it does

The skill inspects the project first. It greps `requirements.txt` and `pyproject.toml` for `sentry-sdk`, then looks for a web framework, task queues, loggers, AI libraries and any OpenTelemetry tracing. What comes back is a concrete proposal instead of an open-ended questionnaire. Error monitoring plus stdlib `logging` capture is the baseline it always recommends.

Tracing gets suggested when Django, Flask, FastAPI, AIOHTTP or similar shows up. If OpenTelemetry is already in the project, the skill routes you to the OTLP path with `OTLPIntegration()` and tells you not to set `traces_sample_rate`, since Sentry links errors to OTel traces on its own. Profiling is off the table on that path because it needs `traces_sample_rate`.

Setup starts with `pip install sentry-sdk`; extras like `sentry-sdk[django]` or `sentry-sdk[celery]` are added only for the framework it detected. The `sentry_sdk.init()` call goes before application code: at the top of `settings.py` for Django, before the app object is created for Flask. You need a DSN in the `SENTRY_DSN` environment variable.

## Requirements
- Works with: Sentry

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-python-sdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentry-python-sdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-python-sdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-python-sdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getsentry/sentry-for-ai sentry-python-sdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-python-sdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai --path skills-legacy/sentry-python-sdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-python-sdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills-legacy/sentry-python-sdk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- capture unhandled exceptions in a Python app
- wire Sentry into Django, Flask or FastAPI without reading the docs end to end
- route tracing through an existing OpenTelemetry setup
- turn on profiling and structured logs
- monitor Celery tasks and scheduled jobs

## Example prompts
- add Sentry to my Python project
- set up sentry-sdk for FastAPI with tracing
- configure error monitoring in my Django app

# Sentry Python SDK

Opinionated wizard that scans your Python project and guides you through complete Sentry setup.

## Invoke This Skill When

- User asks to "add Sentry to Python" or "setup Sentry" in a Python app
- User wants error monitoring, tracing, profiling, logging, metrics, or crons in Python
- User mentions `sentry-sdk`, `sentry_sdk`, or Sentry + any Python framework
- User wants to monitor Django views, Flask routes, FastAPI endpoints, Celery tasks, or scheduled jobs

> **Note:** SDK versions and APIs below reflect Sentry docs at time of writing (sentry-sdk 2.x).
> Always verify against [docs.sentry.io/platforms/python/](https://docs.sentry.io/platforms/python/) before implementing.

## Phase 1: Detect

Run these commands to understand the project before making recommendations:

```bash
# Check existing Sentry
grep -i sentry requirements.txt pyproject.toml setup.cfg setup.py 2>/dev/null
# Detect web framework
grep -rE "django|flask|fastapi|starlette|aiohttp|tornado|quart|falcon|sanic|bottle|pyramid" \
