## What it does

The skill inspects your project before touching any code. It checks the Next.js version, router type (App Router or Pages Router), bundler, and existing `@sentry/nextjs` packages. It also looks for `instrumentation.ts`, `next.config.*`, and error boundaries like `global-error.tsx`. The agent then presents a concrete plan. Core recommendations include error monitoring and tracing across client, server, and Edge runtimes.

Setup follows one of two routes. Sentry recommends running `npx @sentry/wizard@latest -i nextjs`. The wizard opens a browser for interactive login. Because the agent cannot complete browser authentication, you must paste and run this command yourself. Alternatively, the skill provides manual setup instructions for `instrumentation-client.ts` and server configurations.

The bundler limitation deserves attention right away: tree-shaking in `withSentryConfig` works only with webpack, while Turbopack requires Next.js 15. The skill requires Next.js 13 or newer.

## Requirements
- Works with: Sentry

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-nextjs-sdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-nextjs-sdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-nextjs-sdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getsentry/sentry-for-ai sentry-nextjs-sdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-nextjs-sdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai --path skills-legacy/sentry-nextjs-sdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-nextjs-sdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills-legacy/sentry-nextjs-sdk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure error tracking across App Router and Pages Router
- set up request tracing for Node.js and Edge runtimes
- enable Session Replay to capture user sessions on error
- wire Sentry into `instrumentation.ts` and `next.config`

## Example prompts
- Add Sentry to my Next.js App Router project
- Configure error monitoring and tracing with `@sentry/nextjs`
- Help me set up `instrumentation.ts` and `global-error.tsx` for Sentry

# Sentry Next.js SDK

Opinionated wizard that scans your Next.js project and guides you through complete Sentry setup across all three runtimes: browser, Node.js server, and Edge.

## Invoke This Skill When

- User asks to "add Sentry to Next.js" or "set up Sentry" in a Next.js app
- User wants to install or configure `@sentry/nextjs`
- User wants error monitoring, tracing, session replay, logging, or profiling for Next.js
- User asks about `instrumentation.ts`, `withSentryConfig()`, or `global-error.tsx`
- User wants to capture server actions, server component errors, or edge runtime errors

> **Note:** SDK versions and APIs below reflect current Sentry docs at time of writing (`@sentry/nextjs` ≥8.28.0).
> Always verify against [docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/nextjs/](https://docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/nextjs/) before implementing.

## Phase 1: Detect

Run these commands to understand the project before making any recommendations:

```bash
# Detect Next.js version and existing Sentry
cat package.json | grep -E '"next"|"@sentry/'
# Detect router type (App Router vs Pages Router)
ls src/app app src/pages pages 2>/dev/null
# Check for existing Sentry config files
ls instrumentation.ts instrumentation-client.ts sentry.server.config.ts sentry.edge.config.ts 2>/dev/null
ls src/instrumentation.ts src/instrumentation-client.ts 2>/dev/null
# Check next.config
ls next.config.ts next.config.js next.config.mjs 2>/dev/null
# Check for existing error boundaries
find . -name "global-error.tsx" -o -name "_error.tsx" 2>/dev/null | grep -v node_modules
# Check build tool
cat package.json | grep -E '"turbopack"|"webpack"'
# Check for logging libraries
cat package.json | grep -E '"pino"|"winston"|"bunyan"'
# Check for companion backend
ls ../backend ../server ../api 2>/dev/null
cat ../go.mod ../requirements.txt ../Gemfile 2>/dev/null | head -3
```

**What to determine:**

| Question | Impact |
|----------|--------|
| Next.js version? | 13+ required; 15+ needed for Turbopack support |
