# sentry-dotnet-sdk

Walks you through a full Sentry setup in a .NET project: errors, tracing, logs, profiling and crons. Handy when you need monitoring in ASP.NET Core, MAUI, WPF or Blazor.

## What it does

The skill starts by scanning your project: it looks for `.csproj` files, target frameworks, existing Sentry packages, startup files like `Program.cs` and `MauiProgram.cs`, and logging libraries such as Serilog, NLog or log4net. From those signals it picks the right NuGet package: `Sentry.AspNetCore` for ASP.NET Core, `Sentry.Maui` for MAUI, `Sentry` for WPF and WinForms, `Sentry.AspNetCore.Blazor.WebAssembly` for Blazor WebAssembly, and `Sentry.Extensions.Logging` plus `Sentry.OpenTelemetry` for Azure Functions.

Then it proposes a concrete feature set instead of asking open-ended questions. The baseline is error monitoring and tracing, with logging added when the project uses `ILogger<T>` or a third-party logger. Profiling, metrics and crons come in by situation: crons, for instance, when Hangfire, Quartz.NET or scheduled functions show up. Desktop apps need `IsGlobalModeEnabled = true`, and serverless targets need `FlushOnCompletedRequest = true`, otherwise events can be lost.

There are two setup paths. The wizard `npx @sentry/wizard@latest -i dotnet` runs in your terminal, because it opens a browser for login and needs interactive input. The manual path is adding a package with `dotnet add package` and wiring up initialization in code. The ASP.NET Core snippet shows `Debug = true` and `TracesSampleRate = 1.0`, but those are debugging values: lower them in production, or your event volume and quota usage will climb.

## Requirements
- Works with: Sentry, Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-dotnet-sdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-dotnet-sdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-dotnet-sdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getsentry/sentry-for-ai sentry-dotnet-sdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-dotnet-sdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai --path skills-legacy/sentry-dotnet-sdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/sentry-for-ai --skill sentry-dotnet-sdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry-for-ai/tree/HEAD/skills-legacy/sentry-dotnet-sdk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire Sentry into ASP.NET Core and catch unhandled exceptions
- trace HTTP requests and EF Core queries
- route Serilog or NLog entries into Sentry
- turn on CPU profiling in a .NET 6+ service
- spot missed Hangfire or Quartz.NET jobs

## Example prompts
- add Sentry to my .NET project
- set up Sentry for ASP.NET Core with tracing and logging
- hook Sentry into my MAUI app and enable profiling

# Sentry .NET SDK

Opinionated wizard that scans your .NET project and guides you through complete Sentry setup: error monitoring, distributed tracing, profiling, structured logging, and cron monitoring across all major .NET frameworks.

## Invoke This Skill When

- User asks to "add Sentry to .NET", "set up Sentry in C#", or "install Sentry for ASP.NET Core"
- User wants error monitoring, tracing, profiling, logging, or crons for a .NET app
- User mentions `SentrySdk.Init`, `UseSentry`, `Sentry.AspNetCore`, or `Sentry.Maui`
- User wants to capture unhandled exceptions in WPF, WinForms, MAUI, or Azure Functions
- User asks about `SentryOptions`, `BeforeSend`, `TracesSampleRate`, or symbol upload

> **Note:** SDK version and APIs below reflect `Sentry` NuGet packages ≥6.1.0 (OTLP export requires ≥6.5.0).
> Always verify against [docs.sentry.io/platforms/dotnet/](https://docs.sentry.io/platforms/dotnet/) before implementing.

## Phase 1: Detect

Run these commands to understand the project before making any recommendations:

```bash
# Detect framework type — find all .csproj files
find . -name "*.csproj" | head -20
# Detect framework targets
grep -r "TargetFramework\|Project Sdk" --include="*.csproj" .
# Check for existing Sentry packages
grep -r "Sentry" --include="*.csproj" . | grep "PackageReference"
# Check startup files
ls Program.cs src/Program.cs App.xaml.cs MauiProgram.cs 2>/dev/null
# Check for appsettings
ls appsettings.json src/appsettings.json 2>/dev/null
# Check for logging libraries
grep -r "Serilog\|NLog\|log4net" --include="*.csproj" .
# Check for companion frontend
ls ../frontend ../client ../web 2>/dev/null
cat ../package.json 2>/dev/null | grep -E '"next"|"react"|"vue"' | head -3
```
