## What it does

SentencePiece treats text as raw Unicode, so you skip language-specific preprocessing. Whitespace turns into the ▁ meta symbol, and that removes the pre-tokenization step entirely. Handy when your corpus mixes scripts or leans on CJK.

Two algorithms ship with it: BPE, which mBART uses, and Unigram, the default behind T5, ALBERT and XLNet. Training runs from the command line via `spm_train` or from Python via `spm.SentencePieceTrainer.train`. Load the result into `spm.SentencePieceProcessor`, then `encode` and `decode` hand you pieces or IDs. Subword regularization is there too: with `enable_sampling=True` and `alpha=0.1` the same string splits differently each call, which works as data augmentation.

You need the `sentencepiece` and `transformers` packages. Building from C++ requires CMake. Throughput sits at 50,000 sentences/sec, while HuggingFace Tokenizers hits 200,000 — four times faster. If training time is your bottleneck, that gap is worth checking before you commit. Set `character_coverage=1.0` for Chinese; 0.9995 is enough for English.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentencepiece -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentencepiece/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentencepiece/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentencepiece -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentencepiece/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentencepiece -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentencepiece/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs sentencepiece
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentencepiece/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentencepiece -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 02-tokenization/sentencepiece
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentencepiece/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentencepiece -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- train a tokenizer on a mixed-script corpus without language rules
- get identical splits across repeated runs
- segment Chinese or Japanese text into pieces
- augment training data with varied tokenizations
- build a T5-style vocabulary with `<extra_id_N>` symbols

## Example prompts
- Train a Unigram model on `corpus.txt` with a 32000 vocab and save it as `m.model`
- Load `m.model` and show how it splits the phrase "Hello world"
- Turn on sampling with `alpha=0.1` and print three different tokenizations of the word tokenization

# SentencePiece - Language-Independent Tokenization

Unsupervised tokenizer that works on raw text without language-specific preprocessing.

## When to use SentencePiece

**Use SentencePiece when:**
- Building multilingual models (no language-specific rules)
- Working with CJK languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
- Need reproducible tokenization (deterministic vocabulary)
- Want to train on raw text (no pre-tokenization needed)
- Require lightweight deployment (6MB memory, 50k sentences/sec)

**Performance**:
- **Speed**: 50,000 sentences/sec
- **Memory**: ~6MB for loaded model
- **Languages**: All (language-independent)

**Use alternatives instead**:
- **HuggingFace Tokenizers**: Faster training, more flexibility
- **tiktoken**: OpenAI models (GPT-3.5/4)
- **BERT WordPiece**: English-centric tasks

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
# Python
pip install sentencepiece
# C++ (requires CMake)
git clone https://github.com/google/sentencepiece.git
cd sentencepiece
mkdir build && cd build
cmake .. && make -j $(nproc)
sudo make install
```

### Train model

```bash
# Command-line (BPE with 8000 vocab)
spm_train --input=data.txt --model_prefix=m --vocab_size=8000 --model_type=bpe
# Python API
import sentencepiece as spm
spm.SentencePieceTrainer.train(
    input='data.txt',
    model_prefix='m',
    vocab_size=8000,
    model_type='bpe'
)
```

**Training time**: ~1-2 minutes for 100MB corpus

### Encode and decode

```python
import sentencepiece as spm
# Load model
sp = spm.SentencePieceProcessor(model_file='m.model')
# Encode to pieces
pieces = sp.encode('This is a test', out_type=str)
print(pieces)  # ['▁This', '▁is', '▁a', '▁test']
# Encode to IDs
ids = sp.encode('This is a test', out_type=int)
print(ids)  # [284, 47, 11, 1243]
# Decode
text = sp.decode(ids)
print(text)  # "This is a test"
```
