## What it does

This skill guides an agent to use the Python `sentence-transformers` framework for sentence, text, and image embeddings. It covers semantic similarity, retrieval, clustering, classification, and RAG. The framework includes pre-trained models for multilingual, domain-focused, and multimodal work.

An agent can load a `SentenceTransformer` model, call `encode`, compare vectors with cosine similarity or dot products, and retrieve close matches with `util.semantic_search`. The skill also covers batch encoding, fine-tuning, plus LangChain and LlamaIndex integration.

It requires the Python packages `sentence-transformers`, `transformers`, and `torch`. Larger models use more memory, so check available RAM before choosing a model with higher vector dimensions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentence-transformers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sentence-transformers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sentence-transformers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentence-transformers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sentence-transformers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentence-transformers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sentence-transformers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs sentence-transformers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sentence-transformers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentence-transformers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 15-rag/sentence-transformers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sentence-transformers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill sentence-transformers -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build local semantic document search
- generate embeddings for a RAG pipeline
- compare the similarity of two texts
- cluster a document collection
- fine-tune a model on text pairs

## Example prompts
- "Build semantic search over my documents with sentence-transformers."
- "Encode these texts with `all-MiniLM-L6-v2` and calculate cosine similarity."
- "Connect `sentence-transformers/all-mpnet-base-v2` to LangChain and Chroma."

# Sentence Transformers - State-of-the-Art Embeddings

Python framework for sentence and text embeddings using transformers.

## When to use Sentence Transformers

**Use when:**
- Need high-quality embeddings for RAG
- Semantic similarity and search
- Text clustering and classification
- Multilingual embeddings (100+ languages)
- Running embeddings locally (no API)
- Cost-effective alternative to OpenAI embeddings

**Metrics**:
- **15,700+ GitHub stars**
- **5000+ pre-trained models**
- **100+ languages** supported
- Based on PyTorch/Transformers

**Use alternatives instead**:
- **OpenAI Embeddings**: Need API-based, highest quality
- **Instructor**: Task-specific instructions
- **Cohere Embed**: Managed service

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
pip install sentence-transformers
```

### Basic usage

```python
from sentence_transformers import SentenceTransformer
# Load model
model = SentenceTransformer('all-MiniLM-L6-v2')
# Generate embeddings
sentences = [
    "This is an example sentence",
    "Each sentence is converted to a vector"
]
embeddings = model.encode(sentences)
print(embeddings.shape)  # (2, 384)
# Cosine similarity
from sentence_transformers.util import cos_sim
similarity = cos_sim(embeddings[0], embeddings[1])
print(f"Similarity: {similarity.item():.4f}")
```

## Popular models

### General purpose

```python
# Fast, good quality (384 dim)
model = SentenceTransformer('all-MiniLM-L6-v2')
# Better quality (768 dim)
model = SentenceTransformer('all-mpnet-base-v2')
# Best quality (1024 dim, slower)
model = SentenceTransformer('all-roberta-large-v1')
```

### Multilingual

```python
# 50+ languages
model = SentenceTransformer('paraphrase-multilingual-MiniLM-L12-v2')
# 100+ languages
model = SentenceTransformer('paraphrase-multilingual-mpnet-base-v2')
```

### Domain-specific

```python
# Legal domain
model = SentenceTransformer('nlpaueb/legal-bert-base-uncased')
# Scientific papers
model = SentenceTransformer('allenai/specter')
# Code
model = SentenceTransformer('microsoft/codebert-base')
```

## Semantic search

```python
from sentence_transformers import SentenceTransformer, util
````
