# sent-routing-strategist

Works out how a Sent message reaches the recipient: automatic routing versus a pinned channel, what the channel array really does, and why a message landed as FAILED, FILTERED or BLOCKED.

## What it does

The skill covers two decisions that cost the most when you get them wrong. First, the `channel` array is a broadcast list, not a preference order. `["whatsapp", "sms"]` against two recipients produces four messages and four charges. There is no `fallback` field and no ordered-preference syntax. Second, automatic routing is the fallback mechanism: omit `channel` or send `["sent"]` and the platform picks a route, then reroutes across up to three distinct channel-and-provider pairs when a route-level failure occurs.

Pinning restricts matching to one channel and never crosses over. If no route exists on that channel, the message ends `FAILED` rather than silently falling back. Any value outside `sent`, `sms`, `whatsapp` and `rcs` returns `400`. Pin only when a compliance, contractual or content constraint demands a specific channel.

For diagnosis, the echoed per-recipient channel under automatic routing is not a resolved route and never gets updated. Read the truth from `message.routed`, `message.delivered` and `GET /v3/messages/{id}/activities`. `FILTERED` is a policy gate — never retry it. `BLOCKED` is an account precondition such as balance, onboarding quota or an unapproved template, and the send request is still accepted with `202`. A channel of `auto` means the message ended before any route was attempted. Sent records internal reason codes but does not return them in API responses or webhooks, so you are left reading the status-and-channel combination.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentdm/sent-plugin --skill sent-routing-strategist -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sent-routing-strategist/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentdm/sent-plugin --skill sent-routing-strategist -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentdm/sent-plugin --skill sent-routing-strategist -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sentdm/sent-plugin sent-routing-strategist
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentdm/sent-plugin --skill sent-routing-strategist -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sentdm/sent-plugin --path skills/sent-routing-strategist
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentdm/sent-plugin --skill sent-routing-strategist -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sentdm/sent-plugin/tree/HEAD/skills/sent-routing-strategist/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose between automatic routing and a pinned channel
- explain a duplicate charge from a two-channel array
- set up WhatsApp-to-SMS fallback for one number
- debug a message stuck in `FAILED` or `BLOCKED`
- estimate broadcast spend before sending a batch

## Example prompts
- Why did my send with `channel: ["whatsapp", "sms"]` get charged twice?
- I want WhatsApp to fall back to SMS — what should `channel` be?
- The message came back `FILTERED`; can I retry it?

# Sent Routing Strategist

Routing is where the most expensive Sent misconceptions live. Two facts govern almost every decision:

1. **The `channel` array is a broadcast list, not a preference order.** `["whatsapp", "sms"]` with two recipients creates four messages and four charges. There is no `fallback` field and no ordered-preference syntax.
2. **Automatic routing is the fallback mechanism.** Omit `channel`, or send `["sent"]`, and the platform selects a route, then reroutes across up to three distinct channel-and-provider pairs when a route-level failure occurs.

## Decide the channel value

| Intent | Correct value | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reach the recipient however works best | omit `channel` or `["sent"]` | Enables route selection and reroute |
| Guarantee one specific channel | `["sms"]`, `["whatsapp"]`, or `["rcs"]` | Pinning restricts matching to that channel and never crosses channels |
| Deliberately deliver the same content on several channels | `["whatsapp", "sms"]` | Broadcast; expect one message and one charge per pair |
| "Try RCS, fall back to SMS" | omit `channel` or `["sent"]` | An ordered array would broadcast; automatic routing performs the fallback |

Any value outside `sent`, `sms`, `whatsapp`, and `rcs` returns `400`. When a user asks for ordered fallback, name the misconception explicitly before writing code, because the failure mode is duplicate delivery and duplicate cost rather than an error.
