## What it does

The skill reads the clinic profile, the deadline list and the client communication logs, then produces a per-case handoff memo: current posture, pending deadlines, what has been done and what is still open, client relationship notes, document pointers and first-week priorities. Once every memo is written, it builds a cohort summary with a transition table and a list of cases whose incoming owner is still unassigned.

It works from files under `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/`: the clinic profile in `CLAUDE.md`, deadlines in `deadlines.yaml`, per-case logs in `client-comms/[case-id]/log.md`. Memos land in `handoffs/[semester]/[case_id].md`, the summary in `handoffs/[semester]/_summary.md`. The active-case list is an input — if the clinic keeps no central list, the skill asks for one instead of guessing.

Run it across a whole cohort or narrow it to a single case: `--semester=YYYY-term` picks the semester, `--case=[case_id]` limits the run to one matter. A professor runs it to offboard everyone at once; a student runs it on their own cases when graduating or withdrawing. It is the mirror of `/ramp`, which onboards the new cohort.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill semester-handoff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/semester-handoff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill semester-handoff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill semester-handoff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal semester-handoff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill semester-handoff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path legal-clinic/skills/semester-handoff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill semester-handoff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal/tree/HEAD/legal-clinic/skills/semester-handoff/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- hand active cases to incoming students without losing context
- pull the upcoming deadlines for each case into one place
- capture the client communication history before ownership changes
- flag cases that still have no incoming owner
- produce a cohort-wide summary at the end of the semester

## Example prompts
- Build handoff memos for every active case for `--semester=2026-spring`
- Generate the cohort summary and flag cases with no incoming owner yet
- Write a handoff memo for just `--case=1042`

# /semester-handoff

1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md` → clinic profile, semester dates, supervision style.
2. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/deadlines.yaml` and `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/client-comms/[case-id]/log.md` per case.
3. Use the workflow below.
4. Take active-case list as input (ask if clinic doesn't have a central list). Map outgoing → incoming owners.
5. Generate per-case handoff memo → `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/handoffs/[semester]/[case_id].md`.
6. Generate cohort summary → `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/handoffs/[semester]/_summary.md`.
7. Route per supervision model — formal queue / configurable flags / lighter-touch.

# Semester Handoff

## Purpose

Every semester, clinics lose their entire workforce and rebuild. `/ramp` solves half the problem — it onboards the new cohort. This skill solves the other half: it offboards the departing cohort by producing handoff memos that capture what the next student needs to know about every active case.

Without this, case knowledge walks out the door with the student. The new student starts from the case file and intake summary, which is never enough. Two weeks are wasted re-learning the case before the new student can do anything useful. The client experiences the re-learning as a regression — calls go unanswered while the new student catches up, questions already answered get asked again.

## Audience

Professor or departing students. The professor runs it to orchestrate the full cohort offboarding; individual students can run it on their own cases if they're transitioning mid-semester (graduation, withdrawal).
