## What it does

This skill covers Meta AI's Segment Anything Model, a segmentation model that transfers to new image domains without fine-tuning. Reach for it when you need to label objects in photos, build training data for another vision model, or wire up a segmentation pipeline.

The skill ships runnable snippets: loading a checkpoint through `sam_model_registry`, prompting `SamPredictor` with points and boxes, refining a mask iteratively, generating all masks with `SamAutomaticMaskGenerator`, plus a HuggingFace `transformers` path. It also explains prompt types and lists the model variants — ViT-H at 2.4 GB, ViT-L at 1.2 GB, ViT-B at 375 MB. You need the `segment-anything` package, `transformers>=4.30.0` and `torch>=1.7.0`, and the checkpoint is a separate download.

Real-time detection of known classes is not what SAM does. The skill itself points to YOLO or Detectron2 for that, and to GroundingDINO combined with SAM when the prompt is text. Video work belongs to SAM 2. Worth checking before you pull a 2.4 GB checkpoint for the wrong job.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything-model -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/segment-anything/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/segment-anything/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/segment-anything/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/segment-anything/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs segment-anything
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/segment-anything/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 18-multimodal/segment-anything
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/segment-anything/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill segment-anything -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- segment one object from a click point
- generate masks for every object in a photo
- produce annotation data for another vision model
- tighten a mask boundary with extra points
- segment images from an unfamiliar domain without fine-tuning

## Example prompts
- use segment-anything-model to segment the object at point [500, 375] in image.jpg
- set up SamAutomaticMaskGenerator and give me all masks for this image
- show me how to refine a mask with SamPredictor by adding a background point

# Segment Anything Model (SAM)

Comprehensive guide to using Meta AI's Segment Anything Model for zero-shot image segmentation.

## When to use SAM

**Use SAM when:**
- Need to segment any object in images without task-specific training
- Building interactive annotation tools with point/box prompts
- Generating training data for other vision models
- Need zero-shot transfer to new image domains
- Building object detection/segmentation pipelines
- Processing medical, satellite, or domain-specific images

**Key features:**
- **Zero-shot segmentation**: Works on any image domain without fine-tuning
- **Flexible prompts**: Points, bounding boxes, or previous masks
- **Automatic segmentation**: Generate all object masks automatically
- **High quality**: Trained on 1.1 billion masks from 11 million images
- **Multiple model sizes**: ViT-B (fastest), ViT-L, ViT-H (most accurate)
- **ONNX export**: Deploy in browsers and edge devices

**Use alternatives instead:**
- **YOLO/Detectron2**: For real-time object detection with classes
- **Mask2Former**: For semantic/panoptic segmentation with categories
- **GroundingDINO + SAM**: For text-prompted segmentation
- **SAM 2**: For video segmentation tasks

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
# From GitHub
pip install git+https://github.com/facebookresearch/segment-anything.git
# Optional dependencies
pip install opencv-python pycocotools matplotlib
# Or use HuggingFace transformers
pip install transformers
```

### Download checkpoints

```bash
# ViT-H (largest, most accurate) - 2.4GB
wget https://dl.fbaipublicfiles.com/segment_anything/sam_vit_h_4b8939.pth
# ViT-L (medium) - 1.2GB
wget https://dl.fbaipublicfiles.com/segment_anything/sam_vit_l_0b3195.pth
# ViT-B (smallest, fastest) - 375MB
wget https://dl.fbaipublicfiles.com/segment_anything/sam_vit_b_01ec64.pth
```

### Basic usage with SamPredictor

```python
import numpy as np
````
