## What it does

The skill produces ECS-compliant events, multi-step attack scenarios and synthetic alert documents that fill Elastic Security dashboards, the Alerts tab and Attack Discovery. Data spans 5 packages (system, endpoint, windows, aws, okta) and 4 scenarios: Windows credential theft, AWS privilege escalation, Okta identity takeover and a full ransomware kill chain. Alerts land in `.alerts-security.alerts-default` with MITRE ATT&CK mappings, severity levels and risk scores.

Two Node.js scripts do the work. `sample-data.js` generates events per package, runs scenarios, creates alerts, streams continuously and removes data with `--cleanup`. `demo-walkthrough.js` generates everything and opens Kibana. You need Node.js 22+ and network access to Kibana and Elasticsearch, plus environment variables: `KIBANA_URL` with an API key or username and password, `ELASTICSEARCH_URL` or `ELASTICSEARCH_CLOUD_ID` with the same credentials.

Every document is tagged `elastic-security-sample-data`, and cleanup deletes only those. Synthetic alerts need no detection rules installed. Attack Discovery is different — it needs an LLM connector configured in Kibana under Stack Management > Connectors. Don't point this at a production cluster: synthetic data shows up in dashboards and the Alerts tab next to real alerts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill security-generate-security-sample-data -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill generate-security-sample-data -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/generate-security-sample-data/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill generate-security-sample-data -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill generate-security-sample-data -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills generate-security-sample-data
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill generate-security-sample-data -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/security/generate-security-sample-data
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill generate-security-sample-data -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- populate Elastic Security dashboards before a demo
- test detection rules against ready-made attack scenarios
- stand up a POC without real traffic
- show Attack Discovery to stakeholders
- simulate a live SOC with a continuous event stream

## Example prompts
- Set up a demo environment for Elastic Security and open Kibana
- Generate only the ransomware chain to test our detection rules
- Keep generating events so the dashboards stay active during the demo

# Generate Security Sample Data

Generate ECS-compliant security events, multi-step attack scenarios, and synthetic alert documents that populate Elastic
Security dashboards, the Alerts tab, and Attack Discovery.

## Quick start

For a zero-friction experience that generates everything and opens Kibana:

```bash
node skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/scripts/demo-walkthrough.js
```

## Workflow

```text
- [ ] Step 1: Set environment variables
- [ ] Step 2: Generate sample data
- [ ] Step 3: Explore in Kibana
- [ ] Step 4: Clean up when done
```

### Step 1: Set environment variables

```bash
export ELASTICSEARCH_URL="https://your-project.es.region.aws.elastic.cloud"
export ELASTICSEARCH_USERNAME="admin"
export ELASTICSEARCH_PASSWORD="your-password"
export KIBANA_URL="https://your-project.kb.region.aws.elastic.cloud"
```

### Step 2: Generate sample data

#### Generate everything at once

```bash
node skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/scripts/sample-data.js \
  system endpoint okta aws windows --scenarios --alerts
```

#### Generate only events

```bash
node skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/scripts/sample-data.js \
  system endpoint --count 100
```

#### Generate only attack scenarios

```bash
node skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/scripts/sample-data.js --scenarios
```

#### Generate only synthetic alerts

```bash
node skills/security/generate-security-sample-data/scripts/sample-data.js --alerts
```
