## What it does

The skill automates Elastic Security alert triage following a strict pipeline: fetch, investigate, document, and acknowledge. It runs dedicated scripts directly. The agent grabs the next alert, executes targeted ES|QL telemetry queries, and groups detections by `agent.id` within matching time windows.

Prerequisites include Node.js 22+ and network access to Elasticsearch and Kibana. You must install dependencies in `skills/security` with `npm install` and supply credentials like `ELASTICSEARCH_URL` and `ELASTICSEARCH_API_KEY`. Case creation directly depends on the separate `case-management` skill.

On Elastic Serverless environments, running `find --search` can trigger 500 errors, so you must use `find --tags` or `list` instead. The workflow strictly forbids classifying detections prematurely. Most alerts are false positives. Declaring a threat malicious requires corroborating evidence like persistence or credential theft.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill security-alert-triage -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill alert-triage -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/alert-triage/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/alert-triage/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill alert-triage -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/alert-triage/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill alert-triage -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/alert-triage/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills alert-triage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/alert-triage/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill alert-triage -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/security/alert-triage
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/alert-triage/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill alert-triage -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/security/alert-triage/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- group open Elastic alerts by agent ID and time window
- run ES|QL queries to inspect process trees and network connections
- check existing SOC cases before filing duplicates
- create a case with severity tags and attach alert details
- acknowledge triaged alerts and related events in batch

## Example prompts
- Fetch the next open Elastic alert and inspect its process tree
- Group open security alerts by agent.id and check for existing cases
- File a case for this alert with severity medium and acknowledge related alerts

# Alert Triage

Analyze Elastic Security alerts one at a time: gather context, classify, create a case, and acknowledge. This skill
depends on the `case-management` skill for case creation.

## Prerequisites

Install dependencies before first use from the `skills/security` directory:

```bash
cd skills/security && npm install
```

Set the required environment variables (or add them to a `.env` file in the workspace root):

```bash
export ELASTICSEARCH_URL="https://your-cluster.es.cloud.example.com:443"
export ELASTICSEARCH_API_KEY="your-api-key"
export KIBANA_URL="https://your-cluster.kb.cloud.example.com:443"
export KIBANA_API_KEY="your-kibana-api-key"
```

## Quick start

All commands from workspace root. Always fetch → investigate → document → acknowledge. Call the tools directly — do not
read the skill file or explore the workspace first.

```bash
node skills/security/alert-triage/scripts/fetch-next-alert.js
node skills/security/case-management/scripts/case-manager.js find --tags "agent_id:<id>"
node skills/security/alert-triage/scripts/run-query.js --query-file query.esql --type esql
node skills/security/case-management/scripts/case-manager.js create --title "..." --description "..." --tags "classification:..." "agent_id:<id>" --severity <level> --yes
node skills/security/case-management/scripts/case-manager.js attach-alert --case-id <id> --alert-id <id> --alert-index <index> --rule-id <uuid> --rule-name "<name>" --yes
node skills/security/alert-triage/scripts/acknowledge-alert.js --related --agent <id> --timestamp <ts> --window 60 --yes
```

## Common multi-step workflows

| ------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **End-to-end triage**                | `fetch_next_alert` → `run_query` (context) → `case_manager` create (case) → `acknowledge_alert` |
