## What it does

This skill defines the workflow for privately reported security vulnerabilities, keeping all exploit details out of public issues, PRs, and commit messages. Incoming advisories become draft cards on board #43 using the bare `[GHSA-...` prefix and provisional priorities, omitting sensitive reproduction steps from the card description.

The process checks whether the vulnerability resides in the repository's server code or an underlying SDK. Verified fixes happen exclusively within private forks targeting `v2/main`, converting to public tracking issues only after the security advisory is officially published.

The agent never accepts an advisory, replies to a reporter, or publishes disclosures; these outward-facing steps belong strictly to maintainers.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill security-advisory -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/security-advisory/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill security-advisory -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill security-advisory -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/servers security-advisory
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill security-advisory -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers --path .claude/skills/security-advisory
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill security-advisory -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/security-advisory/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- track incoming vulnerability reports as private draft cards on project boards
- determine whether a reported flaw belongs to the server codebase or an underlying SDK
- recalculate advisory severity and priority following technical verification
- prepare patches inside private forks targeting the `v2/main` branch

## Example prompts
- Create a draft card on board #43 for this incoming GHSA report
- Check whether the reported vulnerability affects this server or the underlying SDK
- Update the provisional priority of the advisory based on the verification findings

# Handling a security advisory

Private vulnerability reporting is enabled on this repository and
[`SECURITY.md`](../../../SECURITY.md) routes every report to it. A report
therefore arrives as a **repository security advisory**, never as an issue, and
for most of its life it must **not** become one: a public issue would disclose
the vulnerability before a fix exists.

Two steps in this flow are **outward-facing, and both stay human-only**:
**accepting** an advisory (the reporter sees it) and **publishing** it (it
becomes public, and there is no unpublish). Closing one as invalid, and every
reply to a reporter, is outward-facing too. **An agent never takes any of
these steps**: not once, not in bulk, not because a checklist said to. It
investigates, prepares a recommendation, and a maintainer acts on it.
Everything else here is mechanics.

⚠️ **Keep advisory details out of every public place**: issues, PRs, commit
messages, branch names, and comments. Until an advisory is published, the only
things safe to say in public about the backlog are **aggregate counts** (how
many are in each state). A branch named after the bug, or a commit message that
describes it, discloses it as surely as an issue would.

Related: `/board-ops` holds the board IDs and the draft-card recipes, and
`/issue-create` gives public tracking its labels and milestone **after
publication**, never merely after the release (step 6).

⚠️ **The PR flow does not apply to the fix itself.** It needs a public issue
and a public PR against `v2/main`, which is the disclosure this flow exists to
delay. The fix is reviewed inside the private fork (step 4), and `AGENTS.md`
records that fork PR as an exception to its PR rules (no public issue link, no
labels, tracked by the draft card).

## The flow

| # | Step | Gate |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Advisory in state `triage` → **draft card** on board #43 | Mechanical |
| 2 | **Verify the claim**: which server, and does the code belong to it or to an SDK? | Judgment |
| 3 | Valid and ours → **accept** (`triage` → `draft`); otherwise close with a reason | **Human only** |
```
