## What it does

The skill lays out an Express middleware for `X-Frame-Options`, `X-Content-Type-Options`, `X-XSS-Protection`, `Referrer-Policy`, `Permissions-Policy`, and HSTS in production. It also defines separate report-only and enforcing CSP policies, plus a handler at `/api/csp-report` for violation data.

The rollout starts with reporting, then moves to source review, policy updates, and enforcement. Per-request nonces allow approved inline scripts and styles. The material also shows a `Helmet.js` setup and header checks with `Vitest` and `supertest`.

HSTS is enabled only when `NODE_ENV=production`; strict CSP requires a nonce on inline code. That constraint matters before switching the application to enforcement.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill secure-headers-csp-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill secure-headers-csp-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill secure-headers-csp-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills secure-headers-csp-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill secure-headers-csp-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path security/secure-headers-csp-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/secure-headers-csp-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill secure-headers-csp-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- add security headers to an Express app
- collect CSP violations without blocking resources
- move a policy from report-only to enforcement
- allow inline code with per-request nonces
- test the returned CSP header

## Example prompts
- Add security headers and a staged CSP policy to this Express app.
- Create a report-only policy with a violation endpoint at `/api/csp-report`.
- Switch the CSP to enforcement, wire nonces into inline scripts and styles, and add `Vitest` tests.

# Secure Headers & CSP Builder

Add security headers safely without breaking functionality.

## Essential Security Headers

```typescript
// middleware/security-headers.ts
import { Request, Response, NextFunction } from "express";
export function securityHeaders(
  req: Request,
  res: Response,
  next: NextFunction
) {
  // Prevent clickjacking
  res.setHeader("X-Frame-Options", "DENY");
  // Prevent MIME sniffing
  res.setHeader("X-Content-Type-Options", "nosniff");
  // XSS Protection (legacy browsers)
  res.setHeader("X-XSS-Protection", "1; mode=block");
  // Referrer Policy
  res.setHeader("Referrer-Policy", "strict-origin-when-cross-origin");
  // Permissions Policy (replaces Feature-Policy)
  res.setHeader(
    "Permissions-Policy",
    "camera=(), microphone=(), geolocation=(self), payment=()"
  );
  // HSTS - Force HTTPS (only in production)
  if (process.env.NODE_ENV === "production") {
    res.setHeader(
      "Strict-Transport-Security",
      "max-age=31536000; includeSubDomains; preload"
    );
  }
  next();
}
```

## Content Security Policy (CSP)

### Phase 1: Report-Only Mode

```typescript
// config/csp-report-only.ts
export const cspReportOnly = {
  "default-src": ["'self'"],
  "script-src": [
    "'self'",
    "'report-sample'",
    "https://cdn.jsdelivr.net",
    "https://www.googletagmanager.com",
  ],
  "style-src": ["'self'", "'unsafe-inline'", "https://fonts.googleapis.com"],
  "img-src": ["'self'", "data:", "https:"],
  "font-src": ["'self'", "https://fonts.gstatic.com"],
  "connect-src": ["'self'", "https://api.example.com"],
  "frame-ancestors": ["'none'"],
  "base-uri": ["'self'"],
  "form-action": ["'self'"],
  "report-uri": ["/api/csp-report"],
};
function formatCSP(policy: Record<string, string[]>): string {
  return Object.entries(policy)
    .map(([key, values]) => `${key} ${values.join(" ")}`)
    .join("; ");
}
// Apply report-only header
app.use((req, res, next) => {
  res.setHeader(
    "Content-Security-Policy-Report-Only",
    formatCSP(cspReportOnly)
  );
  next();
});
```

### CSP Violation Reporter

```typescript
// routes/csp-report.ts
app.post(
  "/api/csp-report",
  express.json({ type: "application/csp-report" }),
  (req, res) => {
    const violation = req.body["csp-report"];
    console.error("CSP Violation:", {
      documentUri: violation["document-uri"],
      violatedDirective: violation["violated-directive"],
      blockedUri: violation["blocked-uri"],
      sourceFile: violation["source-file"],
      lineNumber: violation["line-number"],
    });
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE b19eb7b1d11fa098

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the b19eb7b1d11fa098 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
