# secrets-scan

This skill hunts for hardcoded API keys, passwords and tokens in source files. Useful before a push or when auditing a repo you did not write.

## What it does

The skill runs a project against a set of patterns and sorts findings by risk. The basic pass catches AWS keys, GitHub and GitLab tokens, Stripe, Slack, Twilio, SendGrid and Google API keys, plus private key blocks. A separate `--entropy` mode looks for high-randomness strings, which is how base64-encoded secrets and custom key formats surface. Expect more hits there, and some of them will be noise.

Scope is controlled with `--scope`: a single directory or a file mask. The `--git-history` flag walks commit history, optionally bounded by a date, and that matters because a secret deleted from the working tree still sits in older commits. False positives are suppressed with a `.secrets-scan-ignore` file or an inline comment on the line.

The report groups findings by severity and type, and each entry names the file, the line and a suggested action. After that the work is manual: rotate the credential, check access logs, scrub history with `git filter-branch` or BFG. The skill only points at the problem.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill secrets-scan -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/secrets-scan/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/secrets-scan/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill secrets-scan -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/secrets-scan/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill secrets-scan -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/secrets-scan/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills secrets-scan
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/secrets-scan/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill secrets-scan -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/tech/security/secrets-scan
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/secrets-scan/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill secrets-scan -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tech/security/secrets-scan/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a hardcoded AWS key in a config before pushing
- check commit history for tokens already removed from the code
- suppress noisy matches with `.secrets-scan-ignore`
- fail a CI job when the scan finds something
- limit the scan to one directory or file mask

## Example prompts
- /secrets-scan
- /secrets-scan --scope src/api/
- /secrets-scan --git-history --since "2024-01-01"

# Secrets Scan

Deep detection of hardcoded credentials and sensitive data in source code.

## Quick Start

```
/secrets-scan                    # Scan current directory
/secrets-scan --scope src/       # Scan specific path
/secrets-scan --entropy          # Include high-entropy detection
/secrets-scan --git-history      # Check git commit history
```

## What This Skill Detects

### High-Confidence Patterns

Patterns with very low false positive rates:

| Type | Pattern Example | Provider |
|------|-----------------|----------|
| AWS Access Key | `AKIA...` (20 chars) | AWS |
| AWS Secret Key | 40 char base64 | AWS |
| GitHub Token | `ghp_`, `gho_`, `ghu_`, `ghs_`, `ghr_` | GitHub |
| GitLab Token | `glpat-...` | GitLab |
| Slack Token | `xoxb-`, `xoxp-`, `xoxa-` | Slack |
| Stripe Key | `sk_live_`, `rk_live_` | Stripe |
| Twilio | `SK...` (34 chars) | Twilio |
| SendGrid | `SG.` followed by base64 | SendGrid |
| Private Key | `-----BEGIN (RSA\|EC\|DSA)?PRIVATE KEY-----` | Various |
| Google API Key | `AIza...` (39 chars) | Google |

### Medium-Confidence Patterns

May require context validation:

| Type | Pattern | Notes |
|------|---------|-------|
| Generic API Key | `api[_-]?key.*=.*['"][a-zA-Z0-9]{16,}` | Variable names |
| Generic Secret | `secret.*=.*['"][^'"]+` | Context needed |
| Password | `password.*=.*['"][^'"]+` | May be config |
| Connection String | `://[^:]+:[^@]+@` | DB credentials |
| Bearer Token | `Bearer [a-zA-Z0-9_-]+` | In headers/code |

### High-Entropy Detection

Finds potential secrets via entropy analysis:

```
/secrets-scan --entropy
```

Detects strings with high randomness that may be:
- Base64-encoded secrets
- Hex-encoded tokens
- Custom API key formats

## Detection Patterns

### Cloud Provider Keys

```regex
# AWS
AKIA[0-9A-Z]{16}                           # Access Key ID
[A-Za-z0-9/+=]{40}                         # Secret Access Key (context needed)
# Azure
[a-zA-Z0-9+/=]{88}                         # Storage Account Key
# GCP
AIza[0-9A-Za-z_-]{35}                      # API Key
[0-9]+-[a-z0-9]{32}\.apps\.googleusercontent\.com  # OAuth Client
```

### Version Control Tokens

```regex
# GitHub
gh[pousr]_[A-Za-z0-9]{36,}                 # Personal/OAuth/User/Repo/App
github_pat_[A-Za-z0-9]{22}_[A-Za-z0-9]{59} # Fine-grained PAT
# GitLab
glpat-[A-Za-z0-9-_]{20,}                   # Personal Access Token
# Bitbucket
[a-zA-Z0-9]{24}                            # App Password (context needed)
```

### Payment & Finance

```regex
# Stripe
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 580c9c1e32a7c735 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
