## What it does

This skill provides patterns and templates for pairing `react-hook-form` with `zod` schemas via `@hookform/resolvers`. It guides the agent to infer form types with `z.infer` without extra re-renders. Validation modes include `onSubmit` and `onBlur`.

The instructions cover native inputs with `register` and custom components via `Controller`. Omitting `defaultValues` triggers uncontrolled-to-controlled warnings in React. The same schema works on the server.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill react-hook-form-zod -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-hook-form-zod/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill react-hook-form-zod -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill react-hook-form-zod -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills react-hook-form-zod
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill react-hook-form-zod -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/react-hook-form-zod/skills/react-hook-form-zod
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-hook-form-zod/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill react-hook-form-zod -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- connect Zod schemas to useForm via resolvers
- eliminate uncontrolled-to-controlled input warnings
- reuse client validation schemas on the server
- handle dynamic form fields with useFieldArray

## Example prompts
- Create a login form using React Hook Form and Zod validation for email and password
- Add a dynamic field array using useFieldArray and Zod validation
- Set up server-side request validation reusing the client Zod schema

# React Hook Form + Zod Validation

**Status**: Production Ready ✅
**Last Updated**: 2025-11-21
**Dependencies**: None (standalone)
**Latest Versions**: react-hook-form@7.84.0, zod@4.3.6, @hookform/resolvers@5.2.2

---

## Quick Start (10 Minutes)

### 1. Install Packages

```bash
bun add react-hook-form@7.84.0 zod@4.3.6 @hookform/resolvers@5.2.2
```

**Why These Packages**:
- **react-hook-form**: Performant, flexible forms with minimal re-renders
- **zod**: TypeScript-first schema validation with type inference
- **@hookform/resolvers**: Adapter connecting Zod to React Hook Form

### 2. Create Your First Form

```typescript
import { useForm } from 'react-hook-form'
import { zodResolver } from '@hookform/resolvers/zod'
import { z } from 'zod'
// 1. Define validation schema
const loginSchema = z.object({
  email: z.email({ error: 'Invalid email address' }),
  password: z.string().min(8, 'Password must be at least 8 characters'),
})
// 2. Infer TypeScript type from schema
type LoginFormData = z.infer<typeof loginSchema>
function LoginForm() {
  // 3. Initialize form with zodResolver
  const {
    register,
    handleSubmit,
    formState: { errors, isSubmitting },
  } = useForm<LoginFormData>({
    resolver: zodResolver(loginSchema),
    defaultValues: {
      email: '',
      password: '',
    },
  })
  // 4. Handle form submission
  const onSubmit = async (data: LoginFormData) => {
    // Data is guaranteed to be valid here
    console.log('Valid data:', data)
  }
  return (
    <form onSubmit={handleSubmit(onSubmit)}>
      <div>
        <label htmlFor="email">Email</label>
        <input id="email" type="email" {...register('email')} />
        {errors.email && (
          <span role="alert" className="error">
            {errors.email.message}
          </span>
        )}
      </div>
      <div>
        <label htmlFor="password">Password</label>
        <input id="password" type="password" {...register('password')} />
        {errors.password && (
          <span role="alert" className="error">
            {errors.password.message}
          </span>
        )}
      </div>
      <button type="submit" disabled={isSubmitting}>
        {isSubmitting ? 'Logging in...' : 'Login'}
      </button>
    </form>
  )
}
```
