# ml-model-training

A skill that walks the agent through the full model training cycle: data prep, splitting, training and evaluation. Useful when you need a classifier or regressor without skipping steps.

## What it does

The skill lays out a five-step workflow: data preparation, feature engineering, model selection, training, evaluation. It ships code examples for scikit-learn, PyTorch and TensorFlow/Keras — from `train_test_split` and `StandardScaler` to a training loop with `Adam` and `BCELoss`. The agent uses these as a starting point and adapts them to your data.

A separate section covers common mistakes. Data leakage from scaling before splitting, ignored class imbalance, overfitting without regularization, missing random seeds, hyperparameter tuning on the test set. Each one comes with a wrong and a right code sample. There is also a metrics table: accuracy, precision, recall, F1, AUC-ROC for classification; MSE, RMSE, MAE, R² for regression.

For full examples with early stopping, learning rate scheduling and checkpointing, the skill points to `references/pytorch-training.md` and `references/tensorflow-keras.md`. Those files load separately. It suggests starting with a 70/15/15 split and cross-validation, though you will still need to tune the ratios for your own data.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill ml-model-training -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ml-model-training/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ml-model-training/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill ml-model-training -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ml-model-training/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill ml-model-training -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ml-model-training/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills ml-model-training
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ml-model-training/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill ml-model-training -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/ml-model-training/skills/ml-model-training
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ml-model-training/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill ml-model-training -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- split a dataset into train/val/test without data leakage
- tune hyperparameters with GridSearchCV on the training set
- fix overfitting with dropout and early stopping
- handle class imbalance with class weights or SMOTE
- set random seeds so runs are reproducible

## Example prompts
- Train a RandomForestClassifier on `data.csv` with a 70/15/15 split and print the classification report
- Write a PyTorch training loop with early stopping and checkpoint saving
- Check my code for data leakage: the scaler runs before train_test_split

# ML Model Training

Train machine learning models with proper data handling and evaluation.

## Training Workflow

1. Data Preparation → 2. Feature Engineering → 3. Model Selection → 4. Training → 5. Evaluation

## Data Preparation

```python
import pandas as pd
from sklearn.model_selection import train_test_split
from sklearn.preprocessing import StandardScaler, LabelEncoder
# Load and clean data
df = pd.read_csv('data.csv')
df = df.dropna()
# Encode categorical variables
le = LabelEncoder()
df['category'] = le.fit_transform(df['category'])
# Split data (70/15/15)
X = df.drop('target', axis=1)
y = df['target']
X_train, X_temp, y_train, y_temp = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=0.3)
X_val, X_test, y_val, y_test = train_test_split(X_temp, y_temp, test_size=0.5)
# Scale features
scaler = StandardScaler()
X_train = scaler.fit_transform(X_train)
X_val = scaler.transform(X_val)
X_test = scaler.transform(X_test)
```

## Scikit-learn Training

```python
from sklearn.ensemble import RandomForestClassifier
from sklearn.metrics import classification_report, accuracy_score
model = RandomForestClassifier(n_estimators=100, random_state=42)
model.fit(X_train, y_train)
y_pred = model.predict(X_val)
print(classification_report(y_val, y_pred))
```

## PyTorch Training

```python
import torch
import torch.nn as nn
class Model(nn.Module):
    def __init__(self, input_dim):
        super().__init__()
        self.layers = nn.Sequential(
            nn.Linear(input_dim, 64),
            nn.ReLU(),
            nn.Dropout(0.3),
            nn.Linear(64, 32),
            nn.ReLU(),
            nn.Linear(32, 1),
            nn.Sigmoid()
        )
    def forward(self, x):
        return self.layers(x)
model = Model(X_train.shape[1])
