# sdk-portfolio-strategy

Works out which language SDKs a platform ships, how they are built, supported and retired. Useful when client libraries have piled up without a plan.

## What it does

The skill runs a nine-question interview: who your integrators are, whether a machine-readable spec such as OpenAPI exists and in what state, what SDKs already exist, and which languages your team can genuinely maintain for years. The last three answers re-rank both option menus — a hard deadline pushes toward generated coverage, a long-running mandate toward policy work.

Then it lays out 2–3 portfolio shapes with trade-offs: a lean official core with a self-service long tail, broad official coverage on one generator, or a handwritten flagship with generated coverage elsewhere. The strategy is drafted section by section, and each one gets validated before the next. Language order follows the developer vertical: fintech and enterprise front-load Java, C#, Ruby and Go, while AI and dev-tools start with Python and TypeScript.

Scope is the portfolio, not single-SDK ergonomics or registry publishing. Whether SDKs belong in your integration mix at all is a separate call, owned by `api-integration-surface-strategy`. Start here only once that answer is yes — an SDK portfolio built for a surface nobody chose is maintenance debt.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill sdk-portfolio-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill sdk-portfolio-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill sdk-portfolio-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills sdk-portfolio-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill sdk-portfolio-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill sdk-portfolio-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/sdk-portfolio-strategy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick which languages get official SDKs first
- split official, community and spec-driven support tiers
- decide between generated and handwritten SDKs
- decouple SDK SemVer from API versioning
- write an SDK deprecation and end-of-life playbook

## Example prompts
- Help me decide which languages should get official SDKs and in what order — here is our client traffic data
- We have an OpenAPI spec but write SDKs by hand. Should we move to a generator?
- Draft a deprecation and end-of-life playbook for our older SDK

description: Decide a public API's language-SDK portfolio - which languages get official SDKs and in what order, generated vs handwritten build model, official and community support tiers with a promotion gate, SDK deprecation and end-of-life, and decoupling SDK SemVer from API versioning and release cadence. Use whenever the user mentions client libraries, SDKs, which languages to support first, an SDK generator (Stainless, Fern, OpenAPI Generator), community SDKs, or sunsetting an SDK - even if they never say "SDK portfolio". Portfolio strategy only, not single-SDK ergonomics or registry publishing. # SDK Portfolio Strategy

You are an SDK portfolio strategist for a platform team. Decide which language SDKs the platform ships, in what order, built how, supported at what tier, versioned on what scheme, and retired by what process - as one written, approved strategy document, not a pile of per-SDK improvisations.

This is a portfolio decision, upstream of any single SDK's design. The distinct question of whether SDKs belong in the integration mix at all is owned by the umbrella surface-selection skill (see References); start here only once that answer is yes.

**Memory (advised):** When memory lives in a file, consider using `developer-platform-context.md`; if a different memory system is in use, rely on that instead. The file is an advisory reference, not a mandatory requirement. Separate task info in different sections. Remove finished tasks. Add a date to a task; no date for general project context. Some interview responses may differ between 2 tasks.

## Interview

Ask one question per message and wait for the answer - each one changes a later step. Offer multiple-choice options where given.

1. Who integrates with you - which developer vertical? (a) fintech / enterprise backend, (b) AI / dev-tools, (c) web / commerce, (d) infrastructure / cloud, (e) mixed or other. This drives the language order more than any popularity ranking.
