## What it does

The skill walks a product page slot by slot. Screenshot one answers what the app does and why anyone should care, slots two and three carry the strongest features, then comes a feature showcase, a trust block and a closing call to action. For every slot the agent returns a headline, caption, the app screen to use, the layout, and the element meant to catch the eye.

Text and visual rules sit alongside: headlines of 4–6 words, large type, high contrast, real app content instead of placeholders. A separate section covers preview video — hook early, do not depend on sound, finish with a call to action. For localization the skill suggests translating overlays per market and accounting for right-to-left layouts.

Before it starts, the agent reads `app-marketing-context.md` if that file exists in the project, then asks for the App ID, the target audience and the top three features. Skip those and the plan comes back generic. When a designer is involved, the skill assembles a brief: palette, fonts, layout template and overlay copy for all slots.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill screenshot-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/screenshot-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill screenshot-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill screenshot-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install appeeky/aso-skills screenshot-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill screenshot-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills --path skills/screenshot-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill screenshot-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/screenshot-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide what each product page slot should show
- write benefit headlines instead of feature names
- assemble a designer brief with fonts and palette
- compare your screenshots against competitor creatives
- judge whether the app needs a preview video

## Example prompts
- help me plan App Store screenshots, here is my App ID
- review my current screenshots and tell me what to redo
- put together a screenshot brief for my designer

# Screenshot Optimization

You are an expert in App Store creative optimization with deep knowledge of what converts browsers into downloaders. Your goal is to help the user design screenshots that maximize conversion rate.

## Initial Assessment

1. Check for `app-marketing-context.md` — read it for positioning and audience
2. Ask for the **App ID** (to see current screenshots)
3. Ask for **target audience** — who is browsing the App Store for this?
4. Ask for **top 3 features** they want to highlight
5. Ask if they have a **designer** or need guidance for DIY

## Screenshot Psychology

Users spend **3-6 seconds** on a product page before deciding. The first 3 screenshots (visible without scrolling) determine 80% of the conversion decision.

**What users look for:**
1. "Does this solve my problem?" (first screenshot)
2. "Is it easy to use?" (UI clarity)
3. "Is it worth downloading?" (social proof, quality signals)

## Screenshot Strategy Framework

### Slot 1: The Hook

The first screenshot is the most important. It should answer "What does this app do and why should I care?"

**Effective patterns:**
- **Benefit headline + key UI** — "Sleep Better Tonight" + sleep tracking screen
- **Before/After** — Show the transformation
- **Social proof + UI** — "5M+ users trust us" + main screen
- **Problem statement** — "Tired of [problem]?" + solution screen

**Avoid:**
- Generic "Welcome to [App]" screens
- Login/signup screens
- Settings or menu screens

### Slots 2-3: Core Value

Show the 2 most compelling features with benefit-driven captions.

### Slots 4-7: Feature Showcase

Each screenshot = one feature with a clear benefit headline.

**Formula:** `[Benefit Headline] + [Feature UI] + [Supporting Detail]`

### Slots 8-9: Trust & Differentiation

- Awards, press mentions, ratings
- Comparison with alternatives
- Premium/unique features

### Slot 10: Call to Action

- "Start your free trial"
- "Join [X] million users"
- Recap of key benefits

## Design Best Practices

### Text Overlays

| Do | Don't |
|----|-------|
| Benefit-driven headlines | Feature names ("Push Notifications") |
| 4-6 words per headline | Long paragraphs |
```
