## What it does

This skill stops the agent from defaulting to a heavy browser instance for simple extraction jobs. It checks raw HTML using `Selector` first. For live targets, it tries plain HTTP requests via `Fetcher`, moving to `DynamicFetcher` for client-side JavaScript or `StealthyFetcher` when facing Cloudflare challenges.

Running this requires Python 3.10+ in a virtual environment. The companion installer `scripts/install.sh` accepts profiles such as `parser`, `fetchers`, `shell`, `ai`, and `all`. Browser-backed fetchers fail immediately unless you run `scrapling install` to download browser dependencies.

The skill also handles adaptive selector recovery when target markup drifts. When tasks involve multi-page queues and link crawling, it guides the agent toward Scrapling spiders instead of basic one-off scripts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill scrapling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scrapling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scrapling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill scrapling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scrapling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill scrapling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scrapling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills scrapling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scrapling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill scrapling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/scrapling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scrapling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill scrapling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/scrapling/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick the lightest scraping method before reaching for a browser
- extract data from local HTML documents using `Selector`
- render client-side JavaScript apps with `DynamicFetcher`
- fetch protected pages using `StealthyFetcher` with Cloudflare solving
- recover broken CSS selectors during DOM layout shifts

## Example prompts
- Scrape the main headings from `https://example.com/app` using DynamicFetcher
- Extract article links from this saved HTML file with Scrapling Selector
- Fetch data from this Cloudflare-protected page using StealthyFetcher

  Route web-scraping work into the lightest workable Scrapling mode instead of defaulting to a browser.
  Use when the user needs HTML extraction, JS-rendered page retrieval, protected-target escalation,
  quick CLI scraping, agent-facing MCP access, or a larger crawl with Scrapling spiders. Triggers on:
  scrapling, scrape website, crawl site, adaptive scraping, selector drift, stealthy fetch, browser scraping,
  scrape to markdown, scrapling mcp, scrapling spider, research harvesting, literature scraping, paper metadata.
allowed-tools: Bash Read Write Edit Glob Grep WebFetch
compatibility: Requires Python 3.10+ and works best in a virtual environment. Browser-backed fetchers, CLI shell, MCP, and spiders require extras plus `scrapling install` for browser dependencies.

# scrapling - routing-first adaptive web scraping

> **Keyword**: `scrapling` · `adaptive scraping` · `stealthy fetch` · `scrapling spider`
>
> Respect each target site's terms, robots, rate limits, authorization boundaries, and anti-abuse policies.

Scrapling is most useful when you choose the **smallest scraping mode that fits the job**:
- parse known HTML before reaching for a browser
- start with plain HTTP before rendering JavaScript
- escalate to stealth only when simpler paths fail
- switch to spiders only when crawl state and multi-page orchestration become the real problem

## When to use this skill

- The user needs one page or a few pages extracted and you must decide between parser-only, HTTP fetch, browser rendering, or stealth
- The user wants to prototype with `scrapling extract`, `scrapling shell`, or wrapper scripts instead of writing Python first
- The user wants adaptive selector recovery because the target DOM changes over time
- The user wants Scrapling exposed to an agent via MCP
- The user is about to turn repeated fetches into a site crawl and needs to know when Scrapling spiders are justified
- The user keeps drifting toward Playwright/Crawlee-style orchestration, direct API interception, or managed unblockers and needs an honest route-out

## Instructions

### Step 1: Capture one intake packet before choosing tools

Collect the minimum packet:

- **Target class**: raw HTML, normal web page, JS-rendered app, protected site, or many-page crawl
- **Desired output**: CSS/XPath extraction, Markdown/text file, structured records, or long-running crawl output
- **Operational need**: quick probe, repeated session reuse, agent/MCP access, or resumable crawling
