# scope-framing

This skill sets a research decision, a finish line, and exclusions before work begins. Use it when a technically sound answer still needs to address the right practical question.

## What it does

Before research starts, the skill asks what decision the findings should inform and who will act on them. It also asks for a concrete deliverable, explicit exclusions, and factors that could make the result useless.

Record the answers in a short scope document first. If there is no decision to support, the skill tells the agent to stop and ask the user for clarification. Research cannot proceed on a vague objective.

The skill supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. In Claude Code, it can use `Read`, `Bash`, `Glob`, and `Grep`; pass the research topic as its argument.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --skill scope-framing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scope-framing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scope-framing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --skill scope-framing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scope-framing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --skill scope-framing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scope-framing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android scope-framing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scope-framing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --skill scope-framing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --path .claude/skills/scope-framing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scope-framing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ferrumclaudepilgrim/claude-code-android --skill scope-framing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- tie research to a decision
- define a concrete research deliverable
- exclude questions beyond the agreed scope
- spot factors that could invalidate the findings

## Example prompts
- Before researching `Room`, identify the decision it should inform and define what a finished result looks like.
- Compare storage options for the people who will use the findings, and list what the research should exclude.
- Set the scope for a migration study: name the deliverable, exclusions, and risks that could make the findings useless.

# Scope Framing

Answer every question before starting research. Write the answers into a brief scope document: one paragraph or a short list per question. Then proceed. If you cannot answer question 1, ask the user before starting.

## Required Questions

**1. What decision will this research serve?**
One sentence. Name the decision that will change based on what you find. If no decision is downstream of this research, the research has no purpose. Example: "Whether to use package X or build a custom implementation."

**2. Who will act on the findings?**
Name the actor: a user, an agent, or another system. Different actors need different formats and levels of detail. An agent needs a recommendation. A decision-maker needs tradeoffs. Someone following instructions needs steps.

**3. What does "done" look like?**
Name the specific deliverable that closes this research. Not "I understand the topic" but "a one-page comparison of options A, B, and C with a recommendation." Research without a defined end state expands forever.

**4. What is explicitly out of scope?**
Name at least 2 things you will not research. Naming exclusions forces a scope decision and prevents drift. If you cannot name exclusions, your scope is not defined yet.

**5. What would make this research useless?**
Identify failure modes before you start. Common causes: wrong scope (you answered a related but different question), stale data (the information is outdated for the version in use), missing context (you don't have access to a key constraint that changes the answer).

## Output

Write the scope document before doing any research. Save it or include it at the top of your research output. If scope cannot be defined (if question 1 has no answer), stop and ask the user to clarify the decision before you proceed.
