## What it does

The skill walks an agent through shading in Blender 5.2: a clean base from a scanned set or flat colors, then contrasty black-and-white masks that place color, roughness, height and subsurface. Everything stays editable in nodes, and baking comes last for portability rather than Cycles speed.

It ships `scripts/bx_materials.py` with builders, headless painting and checks, loaded via `sys.path.append("<this skill>/scripts"); import bx_materials as M`. Gates are built in: `M.value_report(objs)`, `M.audit_material(mat, obj)`, `M.preview(objs, out, rigs=("studio", "roughness"))`. Baking maps needs scenario-blender-uv-baking, lighting and final renders need scenario-blender-lighting-rendering, and scenario-blender-expert supplies the execution channel and 5.2 API changes. When a sibling skill is missing, it asks you to install it with `npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill <name>`.

The sharp edge is engine parity. Bevel, AO, Pointiness and Random Per Island are Cycles-only, and Bevel and AO are stochastic: EEVEE shows no Bevel edges, and thresholded live masks give 17 to 18% fractional metallic at any sample count. Bake before thresholding, or use vertex curvature. Normal map and displacement never go together, since they encode the same relief.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-texturing-shading -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-texturing-shading -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-texturing-shading -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install scenario-labs/skills scenario-blender-texturing-shading
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-texturing-shading -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills --path skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-texturing-shading
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-texturing-shading -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-texturing-shading/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a PBR material from a texture set with correct color spaces
- place grime, wear and color variation through masks instead of painted color
- texture a mesh with no UVs using box or triplanar projection
- shade stylized character skin with subsurface and pores
- diagnose a material that reads plastic, waxy or blown out

## Example prompts
- Build the material from the texture set in textures/ and run audit_material on it
- Add edge wear and cavity dirt to this model, then render a preview with the studio and roughness rigs
- Why does EEVEE show no Bevel edges, and how do I work around it?

# Texturing and shading (Blender 5.2)

Expert shading is layered masks feeding physically plausible values: a clean base (scanned set or
flat colors), then contrasty black/white masks that place color, roughness, height and subsurface,
all editable in nodes. Values are judged under honest light in both engines, and baking comes last,
for portability. If a sibling skill named here is missing from your available skills, ask the user
to install it (`npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill <name>`); unattended, proceed from tool
schemas and flag the gap.

**REQUIRED BACKGROUND:** scenario-blender-expert (execution channel, review loop, 5.2 API changes).
Baking maps: scenario-blender-uv-baking. Lighting and final renders:
scenario-blender-lighting-rendering.

Toolkit: [`scripts/bx_materials.py`](scripts/bx_materials.py) (builders, headless painting, checks;
exercised by `tests/code/blender-texturing-shading/`).
`sys.path.append("<this skill>/scripts"); import bx_materials as M`.

## Stance (the expert delta)

- **Data maps are Non-Color, "not what looks better, what's correct"** (Price). Only base color and
  emission are sRGB.
- **Normal map OR displacement, never both** (Price, confirmed by Cycles lead Brecht): they encode
  the same relief. Displacement when heights will be combined or truly displaced; normal map for
  export and 8-bit safety.
