## What it does

The skill gives the agent a working stance: shape comes from gradients, the subject separates from its surroundings by value, and every light has a source and a purpose. Decisions get judged on the render, not on lamp values. You start from a controlled base, change one thing at a time, and compare.

Inside is `scripts/bx_light.py`, tested on 5.2.1. It rigs lights relative to subject and camera, ships EEVEE and Cycles presets, sets up and audits color, helps with the 5.x compositor, and analyzes renders. Import it with `sys.path.append("<this skill>/scripts"); import bx_light as BL`. The skill expects the background skill `scenario-blender-expert`; without it the agent flags the gap. Related skills: `scenario-blender-texturing-shading` and `scenario-blender-previs-storyboard`.

There is specific advice on Cycles economy: 3 bounces, no caustics, Fast GI. EEVEE has ray tracing off, so world light passes through walls unless the volume probe's outer samples sit at the inner walls. Soft lights need per-light jitter and a custom distance. Rebalancing belongs in the compositor via light groups, not in a re-render.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-lighting-rendering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-lighting-rendering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-lighting-rendering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install scenario-labs/skills scenario-blender-lighting-rendering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-lighting-rendering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills --path skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-lighting-rendering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-lighting-rendering/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- separate a character from the background by value
- set up three-point lighting for a portrait or product shot
- stop light leaking through walls in EEVEE
- cut noise while keeping Cycles bounce count low
- add bloom and vignette in the 5.x compositor without it reading as a filter

## Example prompts
- light a dusk interior: warm key, cool fill
- check this render for light leaks and noise, then suggest fixes
- rebalance the light through light groups in the compositor instead of re-rendering

# Lighting, rendering and compositing

Expert lighting controls where the eye goes. Shape comes from gradients, the subject is separated
from its surroundings by value (checked desaturated), every light has a source and a purpose, and
every decision is measured on the render, not on lamp values. Work from a controlled base, change
one thing at a time, and compare. If a sibling skill named here is missing from your available
skills, ask the user to install it (`npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill <name>`);
unattended, proceed from tool schemas and flag the gap.

**REQUIRED BACKGROUND:** scenario-blender-expert (execution channel, review loop, 5.2 API changes).
Related: scenario-blender-texturing-shading (materials, skin SSS),
scenario-blender-previs-storyboard (shot planning, cameras).

Toolkit: [`scripts/bx_light.py`](scripts/bx_light.py) (tested on 5.2.1): rigs placed relative to
subject and camera, EEVEE/Cycles presets, color setup and audit, 5.x compositor helpers, render
analysis. Import: `sys.path.append("<this skill>/scripts"); import bx_light as BL`.

## Stance (the expert delta)

- **Value separation first.** Andy Goralczyk separates character from background by value in almost
  every shot and checks it desaturated. Andrew Price: the highest-contrast area becomes the focal
  point whether you want it or not (the bright window beats the couch). Fix by darkening the set
  before brightening the subject.
- **Light size and distance are the controls.** Andrew: a large source reads form and hides pores, a
  small one reads texture and grit, so a face key is a large source, never a small bulb (unless toon
