# scenario-blender-grease-pencil

Controls Grease Pencil v3 in Blender 5.x via Python for 2D rigs, fills, and frame-by-frame animation. Helps fix broken legacy GPENCIL scripts and dark unlit renders.

## What it does

This skill guides Python scripting for Grease Pencil v3 in Blender 5.2, treating drawings as curve data with attributes. It relies on the bundled `scripts/bx_gp.py` module to configure 2D scenes, setup unlit layers, and calculate stroke widths against pixel density. When unspecified, it configures an unlit orthographic camera on the XZ plane running at 24 frames per second.

Character rigs follow a modular multiplane structure with roughly 60 parented objects rather than armature weight painting. Redrawing strokes breaks weight painted meshes. Fills are treated purely as geometry via the `fill_id` attribute, replacing obsolete 4.4 holdout eraser workflows and preventing deprecated material fill bugs.

The skill explicitly requires `scenario-blender-expert` as a foundation. New layers default to `use_lights=True` and draw ambient illumination from `World.color` set to 0.05, cutting flat palette brightness down to roughly a quarter if left unmanaged.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-grease-pencil -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-grease-pencil -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-grease-pencil -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install scenario-labs/skills scenario-blender-grease-pencil
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-grease-pencil -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills --path skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-grease-pencil
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-grease-pencil -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-grease-pencil/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- animate 2D scenes frame-by-frame using the Blender 5.2 Python API
- assemble a cutout character rig without binding armature weights to strokes
- fix broken stroke fills and holes using the fill_id geometry attribute
- eliminate dark color rendering caused by lit layers and ambient World.color

## Example prompts
- Create a flat 2D scene in Blender 5.2 using bx_gp with an ortho camera
- Build a cutout 2D character rig with separate Grease Pencil objects per part
- Fix stroke fills using fill_id so overlapping shapes create even-odd holes

# Grease Pencil (v3, Blender 5.2)

Expert Grease Pencil work keeps every drawing editable and redrawable, puts meaning in the structure
(which object, which layer, which key) and judges the result in motion. The agent draws through the
data API (drawings are curves with attributes), builds characters the way 2D studios rig them, and
reviews rendered frames instead of a viewport it cannot flip. If a sibling skill named here is
missing from your available skills, ask the user to install it
(`npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill <name>`); unattended, proceed from tool schemas and
flag the gap.

**REQUIRED BACKGROUND:** scenario-blender-expert (execution channel, review loop, 5.2 API changes).
Shot planning, boards and animatics: scenario-blender-previs-storyboard. Mesh animation principles:
scenario-blender-animation.

Toolkit: [`scripts/bx_gp.py`](scripts/bx_gp.py) (tested on 5.2.1).
`import sys; sys.path.append("<this skill>/scripts"); import bx_gp as G`.

## Stance (the expert delta)

- **Tom Viguier (Andarta, Ewilan's Quest): the rig must never block redrawing.** One GP object per
  physical element (about 60 for a lead character), parented, mostly FK by object transforms; layers
  inside each element by graphic logic (line above color); sculpting as the deformer; no armature
  weight painting on drawings, because every redraw would need new weights.
- **Tom: interpolate only "sculpted" pairs.** Two keys interpolate cleanly only with the same
  number, order and color of strokes and the same points. Otherwise redraw, or "clip" to the nearest
  drawing instead of accepting distortion. Native interpolation ignores object animation: key
  transforms separately.
- **Falk David (GP module lead): fill is geometry, not material.** A stroke fills when
